Hi

We have just purchased (privately) an Avondale 556/6 from Gloucester (we are in Nottm). The van is just six months old and we have transferred the warranty. Whilst I can get all the appliances working with gas I'm struggling to get the 230v system to work. The heater does not appear to warm the air- though the fan works - I have the power on at the fusebox - the fire set to auto and the dial control set to 1kw - the 12v switch on (have tried off) and even after running it for over an hour there appears to be no heat - any ideas. Next the water heater - The power is on at the fuse box - the pump is working - the tank is filled with water - the switch (and light) is on for the heater - the 12v is set to on as per instructions - and after two hours there is still no hot water. I have spoken to the local Avondale dealer (Kimberley Caravans) and they are not prepared to check whether everything is working okay without charge. Anybody have any ideas on how to sort it or is there a kind caravanner out there who is prepared to show me (I'll stand the travel) - Thanks for reading

1st thing to check is the fridge working of 230v and try plugging in something to a plug socket to see if there is power to the sockets. Sounds to me as though the mains has tripped at the control box. The van and other 12volt items are powered from the lesuire battery not the mains. Also check the main panel where there should be rocker switch to isolate the 230v. Quite often it is either the main switch on the control panel or the trip at the box. Plus there should be a switch somewhere for the heater and a switch for the water heater separate from the appliances, usually labeled ultra store and ultra heat, again these need to be switched on. On our van these switches are at floor level on the side on the o/s front seat, although our last van had them in the kitchen area of the van.

Regarding the heater we always put ours on the 2kw setting.

If all your power is on, have you switched your ultraheat dial to 2000 then also turn dial to 9. Also with the water heaters if you put the heater on before the water heater has filled with water then the thermal cut out on the heater will trip out. If you turn the power to the heater off for 5 mins it should reset, then switch back on. Also sometimes you have to take the cover off outside the caravan, this is usually if using gas to heat the heater.

the Fridge is working and the lighting for both switches are working so I assume I have power. The mains power appears to be working as the rocker switch is lit.

Not sure in what order I have done things but I will try again. thanks

andrew, please keep an eyes on your front and rear panels. we have just px's our 2005 556/6 in we used it 8 times and it had panel cracks. two on the front and one on the back we didnt even notice them they are like hairline cracks. it is a common fault on them im afraid. but since we bought ours they have different looking panels.

Hi Andrew,

Just had the front and back replaced under warrenty to my 2004 model. Avondale wanted to repair but after trying agreed to new front and rear. Like most manufacturers you have to keep at them. Watch out you have the van serviced or they will default you on that issue
