Help - on hol & no electric heating!!

The electric heating on my 2009 Pageant stopped working last night. It was working fine when we went to bed but I woke up in the night freezing. The fan still runs & the gas fire works but there's no elec heating on any setting. The little green light in the control switch is no longer lit up. I pulled the 10a fuse from the master switch & that is fine. Any ideas? Is there a reset flap like there used to be on my last van. I forgot to bring my manuals on hol. I switched it all off while we went out for the day to see if it reset itself but no joy. Any ideas?

Hi Glenn

Brrrr.

The little green light in the control switch is no longer lit up.

This is the one on the wall thermostat control? Are you sure the inner control is on say 9 rather than 1? We made this mistake some years ago and the thermostat did its thing and just switched everything off at too low a temperature.

Obviously the master switch is on as you say you had heat when you went to bed.

You mention a fuse but this is on the 240v line and is protected by a miniture circuit breaker. Have you checked them? Should all be up not down?

Are you sure the EHU hasn't tripped? You should ask the warden to check this for you.

I suggest you telephone your dealer for advice , otherwise consult an electrician conversant with caravans.

Good luck

Cheers

Thanks,

The UHU is fine as everything else is working on 240v (tv, kettle etc). The MCB's are all up & the 10a fuse is the one in the 240v heater master switch which is fine. I'm starting to think this is a dealer job when we get home.

Glen,

Why not give your dealer a ring and see if he/she can talk you through solving the problem. My dealer Golden Castle has done this a couple of times over the years.Of course this is providing you are on a site with mobile phone reception. If you have to use a landline they may still be able to help.

What make of heater is it Glenn?

If it's a Truma you could try ringing their technical support line

Thanks for all you replies. I rang the dealer & he agreed that i'd done all the basic fault finding possible. So its booked in for them to sort next week.

One annoying feature of this Bailey is that the main 240v switches for the room heater & water heater do not light up when switched on like my 1998 Swift's did. At least if the switch lit up you'd know if elecy was getting to it :-(

Wrote what follows below elsewhere and in answer to the same question, and if there is a reset button somewhere to press?

In this case it was indeed my first thought, that being not the 10A fuse, but it's holder within the isolation switch and actually quite a common fault?

First there is no reset to press on Truma electric heating, there are though two over temperature thermostats. One is self resetting when the heater cools, the other holds itself off until you switch off the mains supply to the heater, only then can it cool down and reset itself automatically.

This one can sometimes break up and prevent any power getting to the elements but none of the above should affect the green light

The clue then is the green light on the switch, this is powered by it's own little 12v transformer on the heaters control board at the back of the fire, it relies then on 240v getting to the control board.

A poor connection is the most obvious, doubtful it's on the control board itself so I would first take a look at the mains isolation switch.

These contain a fuse and the fuse holder does seem to have a habit of melting and eventually breaking the connection, your's then might be on the way out hence you see the green light for a brief moment?

After that I would suspect the transformer itself, quite common for these to burn out.

There is also the slightest chance the wiring loom to the switch has come loose but I very much doubt that.

Thanks Gary,

Does anyone have any tips on removing the little black screw covers that bailey use on their mains switches? There's no obvious cut out to accept a small screwdriver etc & I dont want to chew up the covers.

Glen

The smallest of jewellers screwdriver you have, push on one point only then lever off, a small indent on the cap may result.

I have had problems like this before.

Try blue tak press on hard then pull off , or try sticky tape

(duck tape) press on cover then yank off , i found it works sometimes for me.

Well my heating is fixed now. The fault was the isolation switch on the wall (looks like a light switch but with a 10a fuse holder in it). Switch renewed & all fine again but it makes me wonder if the switch is man enough for the current because the dealer said they change them quite often. If it goes once out of warrenty I shall be bypassing it.
