a few weeks ago we decided to buy a second hand caravan, new to caravaning we went to a large dealer were we bought an 94 avondale harrier, which we paid £4800. we picked it up last thursday and went away for the weekend. The bathroom for some reason had a slight musty smell which over the week end smelt more like damp.

Upon returning we decided to remove the tap to check for leaks and noticed a damp patch behind the panel!

as the cassette toilet needed resealing we thought it best to remove and reseal the components before a problem from the shower could excalate.

Unfortunately, the whole wall is soft and completely soaked and as it reaches almost to the roof we were worried that it is actualy water ingress rather than a problem from the shower unit which we hadn't used anyway. The water tracks behind the panel into the dining area which feels solid but again we are worried that this is a major problem. for the last two days we have had the dehumidified and think the leak has come from the rail and awning seals. It has dried out well and the wood has hardened again.

Can you imagine our horror, we e-mailed the dealer on sunday evening with pictures and have still got not reply. What can we do? what would you do? is our caravan worth less money now even if they fix it? we have numourous holidays booked were gutted.

Andrea, I woul dexpect the dealer to sort the problem out, but it depends what, if any, guarantee you got, on a 12 year old van,and the description of it when you decided to buy it.

Resealing awning rails is fairly common to do, especially on older vans, but even some very new vans need it doing,as the quality at build can be ,shall we say, not as good as it should be!!

Will it affect the value, not really, if you have found it early, and no permanant rot has set in.
