on my last last trip last week i had a blow out on the caravan on the a1

i got a new tyre from a local dealer no problems there but when he asked me what tyre pressure i wanted i was unsure

my question is what is the correct tyre pressure i should be running my cravan at?

can anyone help

thanks

sorry to here about the blowout.

i tow an abi transtar the tyre pressures are 55psi according to the handbook.

i would have thought that all caravaners should at least have some idea what pressures their tyres run at for safety reasons if nothing else.

don't get me wrong on my very first run (to cornwall)the tyre came off the rim due to low pressure.

i have since checked them everytime i tow.

Hi Dave

If you call the swift group on 01482 847332 and give them the serial number of your caravan, they will be able to tell you your correct tyre pressures.

Last year I needed to find out the tyre pressure to use in the 400x8 (yes x8) tyres on my old folding van.

My tyre dealer advised the following : --

The tyre wall shows max loading & pressure to use at that loading. At 50 per cent loading you need 60 per cent pressure.

I drew a graph using these figures and so, knowing the van weight (per wheel), calculated the pressure.

It works for me, at 60 psi the tyres get just slightly warm on a long run.

Suggest you compare this method with what your van maker advises?

This was given on a website some time ago,

Caravan weight x max tyre pressure / Max tyre load x number of wheels = tyre pressure.

For a single axle

Unladen

Max tyre press = 65psi

Max tyre load = 630Kg

MIRO = 971Kg

(971 X 65) / (630 X 2) = 50 psi

Fully laden

Max tyre press = 65psi

Max tyre load = 630Kg

MTPLM = 1140Kg

(1140 X 65) / (630 X 2) = 59 psi

Example for a twin axle:-

Twin axle so 4 tyres

Max tyre press = 65psi

Max tyre load = 650Kg

MTPLM = 1600Kg

1600kg x 65ps / (650kg x 4) = 40 psi

These are just examples and you will need to insert the max tyre pressure, and max tyre load (shown on your caravan tyres) and the actual weight of your caravan to find the correct tyre pressure for your caravan. Since this formula is a simple ratio then the units of measurement used, will remain the same throughout, and you can mix metric (Kg) with imperial (psi).
