Just getting van ready for our xmas break, off to scotland.. Only one big problem. I have lost the red retaining screw for my bull dog stabilizer. I cannot find a replacement one due to the xmas holidays most caravan shops have closed.. Any suggestions would be appreciated. Ive been to B&Q to get some bolts, but they only sell 10mm and 12mm. i think the bulldog one is 11mm. We are due to go on hols this boxing day. We r really looking forwards to this year after not going last year, our little one end up in holpital all over the break. Oh yes I am in the wirral area.

Hope someone can help and have a great holiday to you all

Two suggestions.

1. Drive around your local area and find someone with a caravan, then look at the rear of their car to see what sort of stabiliser they have. Then start scrounging.

2. Far easier - go where you were planning to go, but do not exceed 50mph. If it's windy, be careful on exposed roads. If you're worried, don't go on motorways. Leave earlier, slow down, get there safely.

Have you tried Halfords ?

I would imagine Flintshire Caravans at Queensferry may still be open.

I think the stabilizer is needed for more reasons than travelling over 50mph. Sudden braking etc. If you can, travel with one.

Have you tried www.yell.com and put in Nut & Bolt specialist ??

I am from Sheffield and use a company called "Williams Brothers" who sell all sizes. As these company's usually cater for large supplies they tend to just 'give' you the odd nut or bolt. Especially as it's Chrismas !!!!

Try Screwfix 0500 414141 to check where their nearest trade counter is to you (don't worry, "trade" counters are open to everyone)

Re the comment about needing a stabiliser for sudden braking. I don't think so. Stabilisers help to keep a stable outfit stable during sudden and significant changes in direction, crosswinds and the bow-wave effect of lorries and coaches. They are also helpful on a long steady downhill when a potential snake can creep up on you.

As long as any sudden braking is in a straight line and the caravan brakes are working properly, then the state of car and caravan with brakes applied is very stable. If you have to brake suddenly whilst negotiating a bend, then you may well be stuffed - with our without a stabiliser.

Yes I agree - "if you can, travel with one". But if you can't, then slowing down and avoiding potentially snaky situations will do far far more towards keeping you safe than a stabiliser will.

Typo 2nd para - "with or without a stabiliser".

Re Stabiliser and braking comment. Sorry, I have a Westfalia SSK , this does have a positive effect on braking unlike the Bulldog. However, this apart I still think traveling without a stabiliser is best avoided at all costs.
