The car I was driving today needed a bulb replacing. I stopped in a retail park, removed the blown bulb and went in to that well known big car accessories - parts - cycle store. Headed for the bulbs rack and selected the matching bulb.
At the desk the assistant insisted that he checked what bulb I needed. I told him which bulb it was. Tap tap tap on the computer and off he trots and comes back with completely the wrog bulb

"This is the one you need sir" (rather smugly)
I explained that I'd just removed the blown bulb in my left hand from the car outside the doors of the store and that the bulb in my right hand was the same and I would be buying that one. He insisted that I tell him which bulb it was and the car details again. Being a good humoured sort I obliged and of he trotted off again and came back insisiting that the bulb he had was the right one.
Then he started questioning me. I stopped him and had too insist that he just take my money for the bulb I wanted.
"Would you like it fitted SIR"
At that point my sense of humour had departed

" We can fit for you for £X SIR"
I explained that I'd opened the bonnet, removed the rear cover of the light assembly removed the correct bulb and selected the same type of bulb only too be told that I had the wrong bulb, so just take the money and leave me alone! The chap looked all upset and reluctantly took my money and then added "well it's your choice mate". Back at the car I put the new bulb in and as I turned the ignition on so I could check the bulb I could see that I had an audience watching from inside the store. Bulb failure warning light never came on and a quick circuit of the car confirmed all lights working

A goodbye 'wave' to the highly trained monkeys as I left put a smile back on my face.

My sons wife wasn't so lucky, she paid cash for the same companies monkey's selection and fitting service for new wiper blades two weeks ago. They fitted the wrong blades that came adrift and badly scored her cars windscreen two days later. She'd paid cash and lost the receipt. (Payment by card and she'd have been on a winner)
They didn't want too know, even though she could pick out the assistant who had fitted them and he obviously remembered her when they went in to complain. They were escorted from the store in need of a new windscreen.

So much for fully trained pro's!

Perhaps the person who gives them their "full training" needs to take some responsibilty here.

Those muppets changed a headlight bulb for 'er indoors last year whilst I was working away. The charge to change a bulb is £6.99!! and took all of 30 seconds. Only trouble was the muppet put in the bulb upside down and out of line. This resulted in an MOT failure a couple of weeks later!

MOT failure cost is bad enough, but the cost of a new windscreen

Friend priced up some brakes and wheel bearings there for fun. GSF Factor was nearly a 1/3 of the price.
* * * * * *d's generally 'unfit for service' in my opinion.

I have been lucky to find my garage repair shop
I fitted HID bulbs (the white ones that get brighter once turned on) to my car & took it to be MOTed a few weeks latter
Whilst waiting to pay, I noticed that the man had written out a pink failure note but then gave me a pass certificate. He said that the headlights were out of alignment & that the rubber strap holing the rear silencer on had come off but he had adjusted the headlights & reattached the rear box for me FOC

I now have may car serviced & MOTed there every year

Just to say all is not wrong with the chain we did have a problem with my daughters Puegot when a headlight bulb blew. She bought the bulb from an accessory shop but try as we may no one could figure out how you get the bulb in. In the end she had to take it to them and they succeeeded where the rest of us failed. Some one will now tell me how to do it but she has sold it so we will not have the problem again but I assume they get most of their business from a minority who have difficult fitting bulbs.

It's not just the training, the databases at these companies is so often wrong. When trying to obtain a sidelight bulb a couple of years ago I found the halfords catalogue recommending different from my user manual. As it looked to be a very difficult job to actually change I took them up on the offer of fitting. Saved me the effort of trying to do the job then (as expected) finding it was the wrong bulb and having to return it. They couldn't supply the actual bulb so I had to get one off the net, but at least I had seen someone else manage to get the bulb out with a struggle and so had a good idea on how to do it myself later.

When we had teh Avensis we needed one of the rear bulbs replacing. What a hassle. Even the guy from Halfords had a bit of a battle. However I was pleased he did it otherwise I would have lost my rag and damaged it as it is very fiddly! LOL!

Just by coincidence,on Sunday I checked over my daughters fairly new Q5 for her, washer water level, coolant and oil and tyres. Oil level was just touching up to half way mark. As with a lot of new cars they use a bit of oil at first.
Yesterday she went in to her local Halfords to get the correct oil, the 'helpful' fully trained assistant offered to top up the oil as part of their free service to paying customers. The guy took out the dipstick, wiped it, dipped it and then told her it didn't need any oil as it wasn't at the bottom of the marking on the dipstick it was only just below half way.
