My father-in-law reckons it's now law to carry a red Warning Triangle and a Hi-Visibilty vest for every passenger when towing. Does anyone know if he's right?

Sorry to dissapoint your father in law, but in the UK it's not, however, on the continent it may be depending on which country you're visiting.

There is an "advisorary" EU directive that says that it is desirable?

France, warning triange required if hazard warning lights not fitted otherwise not yet, but adviseable.

Spain, yes you need 2 warning triangles & a high vis vest/jacket for the driver

In Spain you have to carry a high vis. vest for each occupant and they must be avaiable to put on without leaving the vehicle.

Most cars have them draped over the seat backs.

I keep my front ones in the door side pockets and the rear ones in the mesh pockets on the backs of the front seats.

For Spain, apart from high vis vests for each occupant and two warning triangles - what happens if you disconnect from your 'van for roadside repairs; do you need two more triangles for the 'van? I found Poundland selling them for, yes

Two warning triangles are only required in Spain for vehicles registered in Spain, not for foreign visitors. They only have to have one.
. . . . . . . looks like I have three spare then! Rent a triangle from " Triangles R Us ".

According to my information, and I quote; "Motorists travelling to or transiting Spain are reminded that, as from March 2000, it has become a legal requirement to carry (in all vehicles), two red warning triangles.".."It is also a requirement for reflective safety jackets to be worn by the driver and any passengers who alight."..."In additon to the need for drivers to carry a spare wheel and full set of bulbs plus the tools to change them."

The requirement to carry two warning triangles, as specified by Spanish law, contravenes EU agreements. This was pointed out to the Spanish Ministry of Transport who have since backed down from the requirement on account of objections by other member states and they have confirmed that visitors do not have to carry two warning triangles.

Thanks to all who responded - nice to know that father-in-law gets it wrong sometimes!. Pleased to hear that I've not got to kit out the whole family with vests as we're staying in the UK for now. Thanks for the heads up on Poundland - might be prudent to have a triangle at that price.

As for kitting out the whole family with vests - some road sides seem to be littered with them, I collected two in almost immaculate condition yesterday. ( Perhaps fridays are the day for disgruntled employees to sling them.) However, if you are staying in the U.K. for a while, use the time to look for bargain deals in any motor spares mart type places you spot as I did. Boyracers 'R Us sort of thing if you know what I mean.
