High pressure tyre "blow outs"

I recently had a double blow out whilst travelling in Spain with my single axle Elddis Crusader Typhoon . The tyres were 4 yr old Hankooks with good tread, and no cracks. The treads appeared to have delaminated from the tyre body, causing a lot of damage to the van bodywork. I contacted Hankook on return to the UK, and was told it was a known fact that tyres over 60psi must be replaced after 3yrs regardless! Having studied the technical section of the Caravan Club handbook, the only advice is to check tyres after 3 yrs and replace after 5 yrs. When I phoned the club, the tech adviser was somewhat dismissive and said it was a problem and that the cause is not yet known! My local caravan repairer, who quoted for the bodywork damage £1800!! said that two other customers with large single axle Abbey vans had had similar blow outs. Are there other owners out there who have had similar trouble?

Hi Vic

Ready your post with intrest as I have a Swift with these tyres. Have not had your problem but was wondering if you could say what speed you were doing and how long you had been driving for. Also was it very warm and was the van loaded.

Many thanks as I would never have thought the tyres would only last 3 years.

Ps. apart from a change of underwear I assume you were okay.

John

Frankly, any claim that a tyre is only good for 3 years is either a very poor reflection of its quality or a ploy by the manufacturer to increase sales.

Hi John

We had been travelling on the autovia for about 2 hrs at around 55-60mph. As there were only two of us I would say we were well under maximum load. It was quite warm weather(about 24c) although when I suggested to the Spanish tyrefitter that perhaps the temperature had caused the problem, he looked at me with disbelief and said "but it is winter"! If you want full info the manufacturers contact is bfrancis@hankooktyresuk.co.uk (who told me that these tyres must be replaced after 3 years) Also the following link gives some extra useful info.

Apart from the damage and stress, the one good thing was the Spanish traffic police who ensured our safety (the hard shoulders are very narrow in Spain) and escorted us to an excellent tyreshop.

Hi Vic

Same thing happened to me in february 2006 towing to and from broadway. My tyres were 3 year old 4 year old Hankooks. I currently have a 2 year old van which has Hankooks fitted and I intend to change them at 3 years old!

Vic thanks for that. I have even checked in my handbook and they make no mention of changing tyres at 3 years. I really appreciate your information and feel that if this a known problem caravan manufacturers should at least be making us aware of this issue.

Many Thanks

John

Hi John,

Sorry to hear you have had a similar problem, if I get enough response perhaps we can take this furher. Now I have delved deeper into this a few points of interest have arisen.

1) My handbook quoted a tyre pressure of 62psi. It was later recommended this should be increased to 65psi. The van manufacturers said a notice was sent to all owners via.C.R.I.S. Although I have owned from new and not changed address I did not receive any notice. The tyre makers have said this change of pressure is very important over the 3 yr. tyre life.

2)Caravan manufacturers appear to supply the minimum spec of tyre which means they work at maximum limits. My van has an MTPLM of 1550kgs.supplied with 175R1499Q tyres giving a load capacity of 775kgs.per tyre. Tyresafe site (see 26th May reply)recommends not to exceed 90percent of its limit 1395kgs(698kg per tyre). Hankook have suggested upgrading to 185R14102Q tyres to give a combined load of 1530kg. This tyre is very slightly larger dia. but wheel arch clearance should be checked, and I guess the spare would have to be changed too. This advice is a bit late for me as I have just spent
