Be warned :(
From Bristol to Exeter along the M5 today all services are charging get £124.9 for a litre of diesel.
As a yesterday at home was £107.9.
Maybe a Sir Greedy owns these rip off services.
I thought Brent Crude was at an all time low

Nothing really new Dusty

Motorway services have always charge more for fuel than stations even just off the motorway.

Not always the fault of the MSA operators either. In their defence, the operating costs of these places, and particularly the rents, are horrendous.
But you don't have to buy your fuel there. As Prof has pointed out, there are garages not far off the motorways.

Apologies for the misplaced decimal point WC.
Smart Phone again.
Prof
Very true but the gap seems to get wider than ever.
10 years ago it was the case most services on the motorway net work were rented from the superior landlord who just happened to be the HMG :(
Whilst it is easy to pull off a motorway and fill at a supermarket not all their stations are caravan friendly never mind upwards of an hour detour.

As well as rental costs, most motorway services have to provide a 24hr service (fuel, toilets and food), not unusual to got to a services between midnight and 5-6 in morning and find the staff very much outnumber the customers, which must cost them money to be subsidised by the daytime customers,

i accept the services have higher costs but the throughput is also very high which makes me think that a captive consumer is being taken advantage of. The Esso station up the road from us does a very good trade selling diesel to lorry drivers at anything up to 12p a liter than the services actually on the motorway.
Because of the excessive charge on motorways big savings can be made by knowing where cheaper fuel can be obtained with a short detour.
I do try to fill up before long journeys and avoid the rip off merchants.

I have known some people who because fuel was a penny cheaper at a supermarket station they made a four mile detour to take advantage of it.

Does it stand up to logic, This was in the days when fuel was about 70p per litre (1998). Their car did around 30 to the gallon (6.6miles per litre) so cost fuel cost per mile was about 2.3p per mile.

So four miles of fuel would cost them 9.2 pence. That would mean they need to fill up with a minimum of 9.2 Litres (which is about 2 Gallons) to break even.

If you look at whole cost motoring (time, tax, insurance, wear and tear etc) the AA reckon it was costing on average about 37p per mile based on 10K miles annual usage.

So to cover the real running costs of going just 4 miles to save a penny per litre would actually cost you £1.48!

At today's prices it's about 60p per mile. So is it really worth trying to look for penny savings on fuel? For most of us any detour would have to be less than a mile and for at least 60 Litres.

Obviously the benefit improves if the price difference is more, or the car is a thirsty model.

........regular users of Motorway Services often buy fuel with fuel cards.
These methods of payment give a discount on the marked pump price.
It is only the casual user that pays the high pump prices and they are subsidising the loss making parts of providing a 24hr 365day/ year operation.

There are plenty off App's that will give upto date fuel prices, and also the nearest petrol station to where you are ( but only if you have your location activated on your phone ) there are different setting to play about with if you look in the settings.

This is the one that I use and just looking now within a two mile radius it's showing five petrol stations with fuel from 105.7p, 107.9p, 108.9p, 110.9p & another @ 110.9p per ltr

On the bottom of the screen it tells me Low is 105.7p Avg 111.0p & high price of 122.9p per ltr

You may well laugh but many a supermarket or Esso ser ice station do we hours and at a considerably less price.
More so if everyone boycotted the extortionate prices the rate per litre will so fall :cheer:
