Hugh, 10% = 1:10, 15% = 1:7.5 (approx.) 20% = 1:5 etc. Just divide the % number into 100.

Like Ray says, percentages and ratios are just two alternative ways of describing the same, just as decimals and fractions. Regardless of which of these measures one uses, they relate directly to the power required to climb the gradient. Degrees would not be helpful here as the relationship is not linear.

Hugh, Hills to me mean a lower gear, nothing more.
Jeff, I hope that is going down as well as up. Are you saying the % signs are a waste of time and a simple sign with the words 'Hill[UP or Down as relevant]' will suffice? Ray
