Hi all,

Could someone please help me understand the rules of hitch weight and weight ratio of car and van. I am new to caravaning and have just bought my first van and would like to take it out next weekend. Firstly how do i go about weighing the hitch? and secondly when calculating the car van ratio, does the weight of the people in the car make a difference or is it the car and van unladen. Because of the age of my van 1990 i am struggling to get the info from websites it all seems to be for newer vans.

Please help.

Hitch Weight

Aim for but do not exceed the lower of the two figures specified by the respective manufacturers of car and caravan.

Here's a link to a thread on the subject of measuring noseweight properly:

Weight Ratio

This is the ratio of the kerbweight of the car, i.e. without passengers other than the driver, to the fully laden weight of the caravan.

Sorry, I got the weight ratio thing the wrong way round. It should of course have been the weight of the caravan divided by the kerbweight of the car.
