You're only partially correct, Jennifer, trailers between 2.31 and 2.50 metres wide can only be towed by vehicles with a Gross Vehicle Weight of 3501kg or more - GVW, not kerbweight.

Who cares whether the vehicle if less than 3501 gross as long as the towing vehicle is capable to towing theer is no issue as your insurance will not be invalidated if you are involved in a mishap as long as the insurance company have been advised you are towing.

With respect, it is the law that states any trailer wider than 2.31 metres wide, must be towed by a vehicle weighing more than 3.5 tonnes, nothing to do with the insurance company.

If any road vehicle is illegal ie no mot, the insurance is nul & void

So then there is no worry as it is unlikely that one will be stopped towing a 2.5 metre wide caravan with a capable vehicle. A Suzuki Jimmy towing a 650 Hobby will stand out like a sore thumb.

I am lucky in that my vehicle is imported and does not have a gross weight registered on the registration document. I have checked official sources and was told that there should not be a problem. Basically it is a Toyota Hilux Surf 3 litre.

All I was saying even though one may be towing illegally, as long as the vehicle has a MOT, road tax and insurance, the insurance will pay out for the mishap if there is damage to the caravan or another vehicle.

Hi Ian,

I have no personal experience but I quote this from another forum.

"I can assure all of you that it is an expensive experience that you will regret, if you are involved in an accident, even when the following driver is at fault - I stopped safely to avoid a pedestrian, who was jaywalking, but the following driver didn't!

I had insured my van with the company that is quoted so often on here. I had given them full details of the HOBBY van in question - including overall length and width. I had been assured by the UK dealer that it was legal to tow a 2.5m width van in this country. I had notified my car insurer that I would be towing the caravan and that the towing vehicle had been modified from standard by the fitting of a towbar (How many of you have notified your insurer of that modification? It is a requirement). I "thought" I had done all of the right things and yet, when the accident happened, I was the one hammered from every direction - Police, Courts, 3rd Party Claims (because I was on the road in an illegal state), non payout by vehicle insurer, non-payout by caravan insurer and we even had to pay for our hospital treatment!

So, for any of you who have 'got everything covered', I wouldn't count on anything if you get involved in an accident.

Your choice, either to drive within the law or drive outside of the law (AWARE AS YOU ARE, that you are breaking the UK Law) and face up to the personal/family consequences if things go bottom up."

It is completely against the law Ian and regardless of whether your registration document has the weight of the car on it or not YOU as the driver are responsible for making sure your car and caravan are both SAFE and LEGAL !!.

You are using an illegal outfit on the road and you are aware of this so you should be ashamed of yourself, some body may get hurt some body may become a victim of your stupidity, i hope its not another innocent motorist.

A toyota hilux is not a heavy vehicle and regardless of whether its 3 litre or not its the brakes that matter most not the pulling power.

from what you have written you seem to have little regard for the law or safety of your self and others and people like you disgust me and every other law abiding citizen, regardless of your incorect thoughts you will not be insured if you tow this van with this car.

What you state somewhat surprises me. Having spent 40 years in the Insurance Industry as a claims man I can assure you it is a condition precedent to policy liability that both your car and caravan are fully compliant with the various parts of the Road Traffic Act. If it transpires your outfit is illegal, ie the weights are outside of the legal limits than I can assure you in the event of a mishap your Insurers will be fully entitled to refuse you an indemnity.

Thus any damage or bodily injury you cause will be at your expense. You cannot rely on the MIB (Motor Insurers Bureau ) to pick up the pieces. Even they did agree they would still seek restitution from you. You could lose everything.

Cheers

Alan

Hello William, think by the response you have got to your question you should stay clear of the 650 hobby there are plenty of other caravans out there with the layout you require, its better to be safe than sorry. Good luck
