All the info I have had seem to suggest buying abroad is cheaper

Thanks James

James, assuming that you intend to use either of the vans you mention in the UK, I hope you are aware that to tow them over here, you will need a vehicle with a GVW of over 3500kgs, essentially, a van the size of a Sprinter or similar and also a licence to drive such a combination.

There are NO cars or 4X4's on the roads here which can legally tow anything over 2.5mtrs in width

Living on the Continent I don't know whether 2.5m wide caravans are free from VAT in the UK but they certainly aren't on the Continent because that is a fairly standard width there. If you buy in Germany, you would be exempt from the 19% VAT if you immediately export it to Spain but you would have to pay Spanish VAT on the purchase price upon entry into Spain.

An interesting thought is that if you buy in Germany, then site it in Spain, who will do any warranty work? Will the manufacturer accept responsibility, so that you can have it done at any authorised dealer?

If not, you might have to take it back to Germany to get it fixed!

There was a problem once with warranties not being valid outside the country where the goods were purchased but the EU stepped in and gave the manufacturers a nasty rap over knuckles as it was deemed to be hindrance to free trade. About 20% of cars in Germany are bought abroad. This market share would be nowhere near as large if customers couldn't choose where to have their warranty work done.

Just another note on the subject of VAT. If you buy the caravan in the UK with the intention of exporting it immediately after purchase, you would be exempt from VAT even if VAT would normally apply.
