Most home and contents insurance allows a maximum of 30 days away from home cover. However, we are fortunate to have holidays away in our caravan which last about three months - what do others do for home insurance when they are away for home for long periods ?

Hi purplebus,

I couldn't possibly recommend this (pardon)

but, if someone were to use your telephone at your address during the time that you were away from home and that was recorded on an itemised bill, then it would be prima face eveidence that someone was at your home at the time in question and would invalidate any accusation by said Insurance co that the house was unoccupied.

I apologise for the long sentence.

Purplebus,

I would strongly suggest that the evidence of someone using your telephone while you are away is not going to prevent a good claims investigator from establishing that you breached the terms of your policy.

If you were caught out and your house had burned down how much trouble would you be in?

There are policies out there which will cater for your needs and for exmaple they may add a warranty that the property needs to be visited or kept at a certain temperature to keep cover operative.

last year we moved our buildings & contents insurance to Direct Line. They were cheaper and they give 60days unoccupied cover.

Howeevr we always make sure our home is checked regularly by close neighbours and the fish need feeding anyway.

Cheers

You do not mention your age but if you are over 50 then Saga give 60 days straight off, and will extend given notice and a payment. We also have travelled for 3 months and found them excellent, unlike the CC who insisted on someone visiting every 7 days, after expiry of 30 days. As my neighbours are all elderly they would not like the responsibility, nor I, to have to enter the house every week.

Richard,

I apologise for the delay.

It would need a VERY Good claims assesor INDEED to get across the argument that someone used the phone and was therefore resident in the house at the time of that call. How could they argue that there wasn't someone in residence, checking the premises, and how would they PROVE ( and they would have to) that that person wasn't staying there for JUST ONE NIGHT as per the conditions of the policy.
