A colleague of mine who taught C&J has taken early retirement and as I am an enthusiastic caravanner asked me if I knew of any firms offering/selling plans and fittings to convert a van to a mobile home. He fancies a high top van conversion to a two berths mobile home. Any ideas that I can pass on to him. Many thanks in anticipation.

It might be worth bearing in mind that many sites now have rules which prevent van conversions from staying on them Colin.

QUote: It might be worth bearing in mind that many sites now have rules which prevent van conversions from staying on them Colin.

That begs the question of : when is a motorcaravan not a van conversion? How is this made clear in "the rules" or is it just the opinion of the site owner?

I would imagine that it is either another 'elf & safety edict or a catch all to prevent new age travellers who often use old panel vans, buses etc.

Most site rules are dependent on the opinion and interpretation of the site owner surely?

Hi - the bodywork of the van he intends to have professionally converted, all he will be doing is the fitting out of the furniture, etc. in the van. Knowing Ken I am sure it will be a Rolls Royce type conversion and not the hippy converted bus. Obviously the cooker, fridge and gas fittings will have to be installed by an approved gas fitter and the electrics will need certification, he is looking mainly at fitting the furniture and toilet installation. As for the van itself he has a contact to purchase a long wheelbase high top van at a very good price - this is where the temptation comes in.

He has a clssic car which he maintains himself and the vehicle is in fantasic condition both mechanically and body. He is a perfectionist at heart. Also his wife is very particular about the house so there will be no shoddy work.
