Hi all. I'm new to caravans and would like to clear on a couple of things please.
I have a seasonal touring pitch,so obviously it stays on site . When I leave the van and go home,I leave it hooked up to mains to keep fridge running, and I put the car/ van switch in the middle position ( off I presume). I don't switch off the consumer/ charging unit that stays on. Is this the correct procedure?
I'm not sure whether if charging unit stays on all the time it might burn out,??
Does the charging unit only charge battery in the van position?
Thanks,, steve

Hi Steve, and welcome.

It depends.

Firstly, I can see no point in leaving the fridge on if the fridge is empty.

I do not know what your van is, so switch positions are meaningless.

Many peoply leave the charger on all the time. But there have been different technologies in chargers over the years. If yours is the modern one which switches to a trickle charge for maintenance, it should be fine. For older chargers, I am not so sure.

Why leave the fridge on if away from the caravan. Just leave the door open after wiping it out and drying. Surprised that a seasonal pitch allows the van to be powered for longish periods. If you charger is working properly and you don’t have any parasitic current drain the battery should last at least a month between visits with everything switched off. Any doubts you could buy a small solar panel that would keep battery topped up.

Hello Steve1, and welcome to the forum.

We're happy to help where we can, but we can't see or touch what your specifically referring to, so it really helps to be given Make Model and year of the caravan or specific product, and if possible some photo's to identify exactly what you may be having trouble with.
