Hi All,

As i am still new to caravanning, i had a bit of an accident coming home at the weekend ... Stupid thing happened , i did not secure jockey wheel properly and it was quite close to the ground, so driving along every now and again i could hear a thud , i assumed it was stuff in the boot of car, but what i think was happening was as the car and van were going over bumps the jockey wheel was touching the ground .. which in turn i believe knocked the grey socket out of its holder(it was not connected to the car electrics). You know the one.. its the one that charges battery and keeps fridge going.

Anyway to cut a long story short it must have been dragging along the ground on my 45 mile journey home(bit deaf never heard it) and when i got to storage i discovered the socket had disintegrated and grey cable was just hanging by its outer sheaf with all the wires cut to ribbons.

Question is do i have to take it to a caravan dealers to have a new loom or is there any way i can do this myself.

Only 4th time out .... feel such a fool !!

Many thanks in advance ........ Harry

Easy,

Buy a new 12S (grey) plug from Towsure, Halfords, local caravan shop or whatever. And a small electrical screwdriver and cable cutters.

Trim the wires back until you have good cable again, hopefully it won't reduce the length too much (and there is a way to fix that if you have).

Look on the NTTA web-site for the wiring guide or my Eriba site http://www.eriba-amiga.co.uk/otr_towbar.html and spend a happy 30 minutes making new connections.

Normally when you buy a grey or black connector the wiring diagram are usually written on the wrapping. Follow the instruction there regarding colour coding and you should not go wrong. As far as feeling a fool for allowing this little hiccup to happen don't worry because truth be known virtually all caravanners have made some mistake or other and may/may not own up and admit to it. I know I have - jockey wheel on road on M5 for many miles until I could smell burning - result no rubber on the wheel and expence of buying new wheel. Just one of many of my foolish mistakes - I could write a book on them - maybe a best seller.

Morning Harry - yes re-wiring the plug is simple as the others say - but remember that there are differences between pre and post 1998 vans. Go to the Caravan Club link to see the details--http://www.caravanclub.co.uk/nr/rdonlyres/ef14e50e-e9cf-45ea-ae4a-ae242aedb551/0/towbarwiring.pdf - John

If you leave short lengths of the coloured wires attached to the old plug you then have a 3D diagram to follow while wiring up the new one.
