I have a bottle of white spirit in my caravan with which I clean the ball every time I tow. Keeping it rust free is just a matter of keeping it clean and dry. Use a cover, and inspect and clean the ball regularly. I personally think the ball and electrics should be checked and maintained every week along with your tyres, lghts, oil, etc. Particularly if you use a hitch stabiliser.

I agree with Sparkes,a squirt of brake cleaner and then rubbed over with clean dry kitchen roll does the trick,I would suggest that you do this every time you hitch up.The brake cleaner by its very nature removes grease etc but evaporates to leave no oily film.
