In the past we had a gas boiler that provided central heating and hot water fault free for over 20 years with minimal maintenance and no replacement parts apart from one pump.

Then we changed to a Governement approved Eco friendly job that had the maintenance men out two or three times a year with sensors, boards and air switch gizmo's playing up. A friend of my wife had to move out of her home for Christmas and New Year as the two year old all singing and dancing Eco Friendly Boiler popped its clogs yet again and after numerous visits from the experts and a variety of spare parts they still have not got it working!

The boiler in our present home came out in sympathy yesterday, Schumacher masquerading as the gas service engineer launched into our driveway and screamed to a halt on the gravel. Swift cuppa followed by ooh-ing and ah-ing he closed his case leaving it on the side explaining that he needed a part and headed towards Winchester leaving tracks in the drive. An hour or so later he launched his van back into the driveway again after hitting the drainage grid at some speed. Well he had the part but it was not the updated one, "Whoops". He will "be back" and we have the Aga on and a log fire and two Calor heaters keeping my aches and pains warm.

The boiler was fitted at the same time as a near neighbours and is the same model, and that one broke down 3 weeks ago and six months ago the same as ours. The boilers seem to average 2 call outs a year plus the servicing as do other peoples new Eco boilers that we know of.

We have a merry go round of waste collectors with the Schumacher genes collecting different types of waste on time targets, so they make like they are leaving the F1 grid at every stop the same as at our old home, and we are told by a council contact that drivers get paid a premium rate for "working on" and taking the waste to its destination so the council meets government targets ;-(

We have nearby, new industrial units with "green" eco friendly insulated buldings and offices that had to have Aircon fitted as the replacement buidings have few opening windows. In the past the council waste truck picked up the business waste in big round bins, now they have 9 different trucks collecting waste each week and the heated warehouses doors are left open due to the frequent coming and goings of waste collectors and heating and aircon engineers and the people with mineral water bottles and smelly bits and bobs for the bogs and laundered mats for the entrances, plus nearly forgot the people who do the office plants and the lady that tops up the on site Choccy bar and Bisuit sales tray and the Coca cola type vending machines in two units and then different vans that call to do the coffee and tea type services. And there are also the service engineers for those oh so clever scanner coppiers that

need a regular monthly call out or they get withdrawal symptoms.

My wifes friend who lives nearby then has to put up with two horns and a claxon type affair from three chuck wagons that call as workers no longer prepare a sarnie for lunch at home.

Our ten + year old dishwasher is still going in our old home we guess but our new Eco friendly one has had two call outs due to its "boards and computer brains", our 9 year old Zanussi washer is still going fault free yet my mothers 18 month old washing machine had a pre christmas call out for the present

of a "new Board", its fourth new part!

My gas chap said he may have his new van when he gets back with the part, the "old one" is less than a year old and and has over 50 thou on the clock and is on its sixth set of front tyres!

I've read some of the back post here about various GREEN posts and taunts.

The world I've seen around here in the past weeek or two is a GREEN JOKE, anyone that dares to ***** about what we drive can go suck on the exhausts of a legion of Eco Friendly Goods service vans exhausts and taste the smell of the burnt tyre treads of the armada of Green waste pickup vehicles to.

As a plus. Before you go and buy your Solar Panels to join the Eco warriors and sell your excess power back to the national grid, remember that there is a control board with chips on it controling the set-up.

Will it last any longer and be more reliable than that of the washer or boiler?

A little bird tells us that you may just need another service engineer in a van a little more often that you think and the systems "may" not be quite up to what you think or last as long as you hope ;-)

cris, what a brilliant post! It just shows up the idiocy and hypocracy of the powers that be. We used to have one refuse collection lorry which did the whole village. The council in its wisdom, put 3ton restrictions on all the river bridges,so we now have a smll truck collect our rubbish. He cannot do it all in time, so we now have TWO small trucks. Then we had to separate the rubbish for recycling. So we had THREE samll trucks. But the recycling truck only collects biodegradable rubbish, so we now have a FOURTH truck to collect the plastic waste.

We also have a kiddies playground near our house. I used to cut the grass with my ride-on mower. The council stopped me doing it "for health and safety reasons". They now send out TWO men to do it. In TWO vans! But before that, they send out TWO more men to risk-assess the job before the cutting team arrive. Has the whole world gone stark, staring mad? Green? Don't make me laugh!

Emmerson. An organisation that has to remain nameless, has discovered an amazing fact. They have all the technology on hand to run their own staffs training days and they have a nice suite with comfy seating etc. The in house catering staff have prepared two lunches better than two of the hotels regularly used.

But no, they are returning to using hotels for training days so that up to 50 staff drive over a hundred mile round trips as somebody feels that training should be done away from the place the training is to be used in. I can't say how many millions are involved with this nonsense but would add that we are all paying for it whilst they claim to be part of the Green revolution.

The same people now have drinking water delivered "like what they use" in Private business premises. Yeah, yet another van to deliver and another maintenance van as the water machine provides hot mineral water for making tea and coffee !!!!!!!! The lever type plastic taps are so fiddly inteligent people can't work out how to use them and snap off the lever on a regular basis so apart from break downs the service man is in at leats 4 or 5 times a month in his nice ECO freindly chariot - NOT !

I fitted my gas central heating system back in 1978, and the boiler has only once let me down, the gas valve packed up, but easily replaced.

I dread te day it packs up and is unable to be fixed and I have to opt for a new, very unreliable, shoddily made replacement.

We replaced our ancient boiler with high output combi 3 years ago when we had an extention done. It broke on a regular basis for the first two years and has had three pumps ,new heat exchanger and all the valves replaced TWICE. It's working ok at the moment but is no where near as good as the old one.

I have a wall mounted Baxi balanced flue central heating boiler which was installed in 1982 and is in excellent working order. I have the annual gold star service contract with British Gas and every year the fitter tells me the same story, which is confirmed by letter from BG a few days later, that my boiler is obsolete and that they are having difficulties in obtaining parts. I know from my experience as a building surveyor that this type of boiler was in its day the best available and it would be like Ford saying that the are going to stop manufacturing parts for the Escort as it is now obsolete. It is just a big con trying to get me to have a new boiler installed at fantastic expence to me.

Incidentally I read in the Daily Mail today that HM Customs and Inland Revenue employers are now having black tape stuck to their desk surface to try and get them to tidy their desk and think logically.

As the old Joe Brown song states " What a crazy world we are living in". Do you remember this song from the late 1950s?

The gas man came back late on this afternoon, but the boiler still doesn't work!

It's an Eco friendly Condensing thingy, our experience and that of many others is much like Brians.

It's not a lot of good though selling us all this so called green tat that needs an army of vans driven by Schumacher clones to keep going the gear with obvious built in faults that give a shorter life expectancy meaning you have to buy a new one every 5 to 8 years.

Same goes for washing machines and other gear. Somebody is taking the **** with all these so called "Greener" goods and with many green waste and green buildings serviced by an army of van and trucks that clutter roads that I and you are expected to pay to use.

The only thing that's Green are the clots that believe all the twaddle on the "packaging"! Be the packaging on white goods and other gear or on Government Propaganda packaging.

Back at the end of the `90s we invested in an uptodate Boshe combi boiler which apart from anual servicing has stood us in good stead.

This last year when it was serviced I commentedon its age and asked the engineer if we were soon due to have to replace it.

His comment rather astounded me in that any boiler made by them was servicable and parts kept available for a minimum of 15 years.

I now sleep easier at nights knowing I should wake up warm and not be expecting to dip my hand in my pocket for a fair few years yet.

The other good thing is they are willing to honour their service contrat for the life of the boiler.

We now have central heating again :)

Schumacher screeched back into the driveway followed a few minutes later by Schumacher 2. They both have new vans today, uprated engines on the last ones " as they may stand the hammering they take a bit better" ! Schumacher 2 has had 21 tyres on his van in under a year!

So our nice GREEN condensing boiler has had four visits from Schumacher and one from Schumacher 2 this week!

Apart from the fuel their vans have burned and over thirty tyres on two vans and what ever their colleagues use exactly how Green does that make our boilers and the others they service?

The previous one in the house was there for over twenty years and never went wrong but my wife had the new one put in as they are supposed to be more efficient and more eco friendly. So with this weeks visit and the break down about six months ago any environmental savings we have made must have been blown away by the service engineers visits! We might as well have kept the old less efficient but reliable Baxi job.

My sister in-law called earlier and said that no one told their waste collectors about the Christmas and Holiday Schedule sent out to homes in her area. No one put their rubbish out on Tuesday the council had to send out some collectors again on Wednesday, the recycled paper wagon turned up a day early she was told and out again yesterday as most people put out the paper yesterday as per the councils schedule. Collectors and others have been out yesterday PM and this morning clearing up the mess! No doubt after the risk assesors had been out in another van to check out the state of play ;-)

My wife tells me that the dishwasher is not doing what it should yet again, as the sympton is again the same as before. She diagnoses that it will need yet another new board! Yet another cousin of Schumacher will launch into the driveway no doubt, diagnose the problem and then head off to await the part and launch back in again a few days later she tells me.

May be it's me , but is built in obsolescense and unreliable technology not something that should be addressed and looked into by those ramming "Being Green" down our throats !

I read of old folks being threatened with

Schumacher has been back as my wife had a near cold shower this morning as the boiler had not cut in so the house was freezing.

The new van launched into the driveway around 11.30 and we have some sort of switching problem that may be linked to last weeks problems :-(

G Browns Deisel Tax = 1 or WON

Eco friendly Boiler, the environment, Green Peace, Eco Warriors and Carbon Trading Merchants = 0 or a waste of B***** time.

So far in the past six months the only real winner re this fixture ( eco friendly boiler ) is Mr Brown followed by the gas service fitters and the motor trade!

But guess what -

The I'LL BE BACK" Schumacher clone has to get yet another part.

Thanks be to CALOR and mobile heaters !

Hi Cris,

My hubby is a gas engineer for a local housing association and there are certain makes of boilers that are in some of their houses that they are attending continuously and they get as fed up as you.

I can`t see anywhere that you`ve mentioned what make it is but i bet if i ask him he`ll have some idea straight away looking at all the problems you`ve had. When he comes in i`ll ask him and let you know to see if it`s one of the same ;)

Good luck hope you get it sorted.

Jackie
