According to the handbook, which I have here, a Freelander 2 can tow up to 2000kg braked, 750kg unbraked. Max nose weight 150 KG.

Hi Mark,
We also traded our single axle for a twin earlier this year and tow with a FL2. I have a Pegasus 624 with a 4 wheel drive mover fitted and a roof mounted Dometic AC unit. I have just just returned from a tour down to the South of France / Italy and towed 3500 miles with absolutely no problem whatsoever.

Cheers DJM, im guessing your weight would be in the 1750 to 1800 bracket? what mpg did you average on your french trip? was there any noticeable difference between the single and the twin towing performance? How much did your single weigh in at? On a seperate issue, one of the only things holding me back on the 646 is using a twin axle in france - ive heard they arent particulalry welcome on french sites to disuade the travellers - how did you get on? Thanks

Hi Mark,
Yes I will be around that weight, maybe a shade lighter but in that ball park. Bearing in mind that my FL2 is an automatic, I was averaging around 22-25 but in strong headwinds drops to around 19-20. Regarding the difference between towing a single axle to a twin; I find the twin more stable particularly in windy conditions, having said that my previous van always towed very well without any significant issues. I used to tow around 1400Kg and obviously the performance was slightly better than it is now, acceleration wise. I didn't have any problem with any site, except on some sites the pitch size was to small and we had to pitch diagonally, or the access was very tight with to many obstructions in the way. However we are pleased we made the change, love the extra space and not having to make the bed up every night etc...

Hi All

We have a FL2 SE, V5 doc says 1958 i think.
But if you add the factory fitted roof rails and towbar. its over 2000KG.
Have an Abbey Vouge 650 re-plated to 1800KG, as have powertouch AWD mover fitted.
Pulls great.
Yes the nose weight is 150kg, but the ALKO hitch is only 100kg.

Hi DJM
The MTPLM of the Pegasus is 1661kg, so well within the capacity of the Freelander. I tow a Coachman Pastiche 560/4 with a MTPLM of 1630kg on a single axle and my Freelander 2 tows like a dream. We have towed with various car and caravan combinations for over 35 years and I must say that this is one of the best towcars I have had and beats our previous Disco 2.
We have just come back from a 3 week holiday in France where we managed to get 25 MPG average when towing, sometimes getting as much as 30 MPG but in the more hilly areas or fast motorway runs the figures drop to 22.
Our van is 7.6 metres overall and I find that on stretches of fast and open road with a high side wind the back end of the van moves a little, more so than our previous Senator Arizona. Our Coachman has an Alko hitch and ATC, stable as a rock on a reasonable day, just a little different in high winds but I would think, as you said, that the twin axle would be more stable.
Regards
Alan
