You may as well ask "How long is a peice of string" once you get onto the M5 you are in the hands of God, you can sail straight through, or you could be on there for several hours.

Depends on if you are a lucky person or not.

Hi Ian

we go to Newquay area quite alot from the Midlands. Roughly 250 miles.

We generally stop a couple of times (usually after about 2 hours driving) as we have a little one and dogs and both need to stretch their legs.

Its takes us about 6 - 6 1/2 hours in total and that takes into account the usual delays on the M5!!!

I personally dont think the A30 is that bad now alot of it has been upgraded , the M5 is the biggest pain especially around Bristol

Absolutely agree with steve and roger. We went from Derbyshire to Devon last Summer. The A30 was fine. The M5 was a carpark. Took us nearly 7 hours going there, with hardly any service stops. Coming back, the traffic was much better and it took about 4 and a half hours.

We have not been to newquay for some years, but when we did, it was a case of driving at night, aiming to park up at site 4 or 5 hours before time and get some sleep.

Even at night the M5 was busy, but moving, always had a smile later when we heard of the 30 mile tail backs.

Drop down on to the 303 from Berks via M3 or A34 and follow on to Honiton and Exeter.

You'll miss most of the M5 like fun and games and there are plenty of nice little stops.

Yes.... How long is a piece of string.

Avoid Fridays and rush hours to give yourself the best chance, whatever way you go!

When we go to Cornwall, we always travel overnight, a lot less traffic, we are usually in a convoy of caravans and cars with trailers and trailer tents on the back, so we are obviously not the only ones who do it.

Ian,

I live in swindon and regularly travel to Perranporth and area, just came back last week, great weather as well. Any way we were lucky both ways with traffic and with a 15 - 20 min stop each way it takes 4 1/2 hours at a steady 60 on cruise control. In summer we allow for traffic and tend to leave home 6 am ish otherwise you could be unlucky enough to add a couple of hours.
