How many berths do you have/need?

I rarely go camping during the school holidays, so my survey is hardly thorough or scientific, but I get the impression at other times that there are a lot of couples, often retired, who are occupying a van with a lot more berths than 2.

Now I know that it is common practice when renting accomodation to take a couple more beds worth in order to get extra space and storage - this certainly applies on boats, and also to cottages.

So how many people out there have got spare berths that never get used for sleeping?

Or perhaps only a few nights a year?

Did you think the grandchildren would use them - and have they?

In my case, for instance, the van was a 4-berth, but is now strictly a 2-berth. When some friends borrowed it last summer so their daughter could do a university geography project, she slept in the awning extension; they did this for 3 weeks, and seemed quite happy at the end.

have a 4 Berth, but only rarely need the other 2 berths, in fact we put up a porch awning with an annexe fitted and when weather conditions permit we sleep out their, much more comfortable than caravan beds!!!

Have a nice caravanning year

When our kids were young we had two berth caravans and the kids slept in an Awning inner tent or their own tents when older. Our last van for two of us was a 4/5 berth, the optional fold out 5th berth went into storage and we only ever used the either of the double end beds ourselves.

Looking at new vans at present, we will probably end up with a 3/5 or 4/5 berth as we want a large twin axle van without a darn fixed bed.

Our kids are adults and if they turn up they prefer tents and their own space.

We would never ever use the caravan with any one else as we don't like other people really and the van we choose will be bought for maximum space for us and large make up bed, any other berths will be redundant again I guess.

We've a 4/5 berth twin axle. There are only ever 2 of us, so we leave the back double dinette made up as a bed. We like the space to sit in comfort and not have the bother of making the bed up. But if at all possible we live outside and only use the van for sleeping.

Our first caravan was a 4 berth with bunks at the back. Our teenage son soon outgrew the bunks (he's about 6'1" and has been since 15) so we bought a van with a double at the front and a small pull out double at the back which he could sleep on corner to corner. Now that he no longer travels with us the bed is redundant but we've grown accustomed to the space and have not seen any suitable 2 berth caravans with similar space so we're hanging on to what we've got. I'm sure there are others like us.

We have a 4 berth. We used to have a 2 berth but after a 200km cycle ride, a 30 - 50 mile walk or a long day bellringing it was a pain making up the bed. Now we have a short front 4 berth with a fixed bed which sort of suits except I like cl/cs site so would rather have a proper lined shower so will be getting an island bed 4 berth in September when we change the car.
