after having a renewal quote for my caravan, i changed the criteria a bit and the quote went right down when i changed the amount of contents cover, how much would you say was an average amount, many of the things i added up as contents such as cooker, fridge, cushions etc., should this be as extra on the contents or will it be on the caravan insurance itself as fixtures and fittings, please help!!

My understanding is that the insurance value of the caravan is what you would pay for it from a dealer and the fixtures and fittings such as fridge and cooker are included in that figure. Contents, accessories and personal belongings are separate. Some items may be included in your Home insurance so check you are not insuring something twice.

We understood that our caravan contents would be covered on the house insurance so we don't insure the contents on the caravan policy but a friend of ours advised us that it's not that simple. She had her van broken into at it's seasonal storage site and tried to claim on her household contents insurance but was told she could only claim for personal effects that you would reasonably carry around with you. She could claim for her son's PSP, radio, clothes etc but not for the sleeping bags, pillows and kitchen equipment that were stolen.

Worth bearing in mind if you've got quite a bit of kit in your caravan.
