After reading the post about 007 and vans it made me realise how much we love vanning. Only been at it for a year bought a swift 555 dealer special new to put on the back of my audi A6 avant. soon changed the car to a sorrie (by far better especially as it is an auto)

At 30 and 29 with no kids some people laugh at us at work (teachers) but to us this is the most fun we have had in a long time. we have both travelled the world Lived abroad. But nothing beats the van.

So much so we are looking at spending our honeymoon in the van in the summer(either the North of scotland or South of France). We have spent virtually every weekend since last september away and every school holiday apart from one week in Gibraltar in the van.

The weekends we do not get away we almost get depressed. You can not beat Friday night, tow for a bit to a new place, set up kettle on/wine open ahhhhhhhhh.

It has got so bad that when we come home on a sunday the dog sulks. We were once at a caravan dealership and i had to get something out of the boot. The dog jumped out and ran into an open van and laid where her bed usually is. The couple who came out of the end bathroom got a shock as my dog was laid down.

Hope everyone enjoys it as much as we do, Lets hope we get some more sites 'up north. If anyone has any good sites about an hour from Darlington let me know.

My best so far. Sea view CC berwick-what a view

Ayr cragie GDNs-nice and close to town

Garlieston- cramped but superb

whitewater stockton on tees- our favourite weekender 30 mins away.

Keswick on the lake.

Sites we have booked

Blackpool -christmas

cotswolds new year

Keswick feb.

Happy vanning

Couldn't agree more. Have been caravanning since 1981 - since retiring last Feb have had 6 weeks in Portugal & Spain, a month in France, a week in Perranporth, week in New Forest, week in Henley and Kent, weekend in Bude, week in Woolacombe. Been back 10 days from last trip and already got withdrawl symptons. Getting excited about May/June holiday in France already but that's still 6 months away. Hoping to get some winter sun again but waiting to see specialist about dodgy knee.

Only snag is interest rate is c**p on savings. Prices on sites have been OK though even CC sites

Charlie,

You obviously love being away as much as we do, have you tried rallying, it's a load cheaper than sites etc and you meet some great people, why not have a look at the web site of an organisation based in the north east - Freedom North East 2000 Caravan Club www.fne2000cc.co.uk

Glad to know you are enjoying your new hobby. However, please do not get obsessed with the hobby. It should be part and parcel of a varied life, not the be all and end all. Otherwise you will turn into very sad people.

There are times in life when it is very pleasant to do something totally different at the weekends, maybe a short break in a hotel, or even fly off for a weekend in Paris or Amsterdam. Also do not give up on the package holiday theme. I do take my wife away for a couple of weeks each year to a hotel in Mallorca, just so she can get pampered for a while, and enjoy meeting people who have never heard of caravans.

no worry of becoming sad as the van life allows for all of our interests, walking, fishing, food, photography.

the package holiday has never really interested me as i work to a timetable all week. Having travelled to 47 countries in the world in various forms (package/tour/me and and a wad of cash) I like my own timetable) i have now realise the grass is not always greener on the other side.

only two sleeps untill next time away

Hi charlie,

'only two sleeps untill next time away'......love that!!

You get stuck in there, its great when people at work take the mick it gives me an opportunity talk about the whole caravan experience, even if they don't want to hear.

Always thought about white water at stockton, is it any good for the kids.

Also have you tried Brompton on swale or the CC site north of Richmond ??

white water is a cracker with a kids play area and loads of space. It is right next to the tees barrage where you can watch the canoes kayaks etc. there is a pub next door (brewsters type) and within a 10 min walk is teeside park retail centre with cinema bowling etc. But next door is a huge nature reserve to walk round.

Seen seals on the river. You can alos walk into stockton in about half an hour. views over the tees flyover. towards teh transporter bridge and roseberry topping.

An absolute cracker.

have never tried the two you mention but probably will do soon.

8 hours to hitching up
