How much to pay new

I am very frustrated at the moment.

I want to buy a new (my first) caravan. Something like a Swift Charisma 540, Bailey Pageant Provence, etc. I cannot find out how much I should be paying. I suspect the caravan market is similar to the new car market where nobody pays List Price. For example, a new BMW is available with 15% discount from uk dealers or brokers. Without a trade in, how much should I be paying for one of these caravans. The list price is around £12,500.

Don't be shy, tell me what you think so I can go 'armed'. I asked a salesman at Discover (Chorley) for £2k off a Bailey but he wouldn't talk about a price until I'd committed to buying it first (????).

Many thanks for any responses

Personally I don't think you'll get much discount, sorry (unless you want an unpopular model, which isn't selling). It's a seller's market at the moment with lots of buyers who are all discovering the joys of caravanning. This means that discounts just don't happen. You'll end up paying whatever you have to, to get the caravan you really want. Only by deciding to buy something that no one else wants will you get a discount. I don't think you'll get much at all off the models you're interested in! Others may disagree, and if they do, then I'd like them to put me in contact with the dealer they've negotiated their amazing discount from!!!

However, if I was buying my first ever caravan it certainly wouldn't be brand new - I'd test the model and the market first, and buy a cheap second hand model in the layout I thought I wanted, to see if it suited. Otherwise, you're in for major depreciation if you decide that the layout isn't for you.

Hi - we bought our Bailey Ranger from Discover at Chorley and we went onto a waiting list. They were not interested in giving a discount as they said these vans sell themselves, hopefully this is a good point as when we come to sell it - it will still be worth something. There is another Bailey dealer called Bardsea Leisure at Ulveston in Cumbria (we took our van there to be serviced - very helpful) they are an independent company and are not part of a chain so you could maybe try them. We also stayed on their caravan site whilst the van was serviced and had a look around the vans. They make a point of saying they don't have pushy sales people.

Dont want a used one. I don't mind cleaning cassette toilet or upholstery after my family, but not after some 'fat auld fella' has had a go. Sounds snobby I know but then I'm prepared to pay for that priveledge. Only one layout will work. Twin dinettes. full stop. 3 kids. Wooden partition doors great. Happy days.

Hi, have only just read your thread. In answer to your question, deals can be made. We have a Series 6 Loire on order. Our dealer doesn't charge the delivery fee that I think all others do, as they collect the van themselves from Bailey, so that saves us about

When I bought my new van early last year I enquired with a large dealer about reduced prices pointing out I had no trade in. He promtly quoted me a price well below list price.

For various reasons I decided to try another dealer. Over the phone I told him how much I'd been quoted, he promptly offered

Ian, as you have no trade in to p/x I'm sure you will be able to negotiate some sort of deal. It means the dealer is going to have one less old caravan to try and get shot of.

As for the guy who wouldn't talk money unless you committed to buy, how can you commit to buy unless you know the price? Turn it back on him tell him you wont commit till he makes an offer.

Shop around your local dealers, sure you'll get some sort of a deal.

Good Luck

Robert

Hi Ian,

Re the OTR charge, your are right of course about it still costing our dealer to collect the vans, do the pdq check etc, but he is very close to the factory at Bristol. As far as I know they haven't charged the OTR charge for some years, it's on the front page of their web site, and when we bought our last van they didn't charge it either.

We do have a van to px but our dealer tells you a price for the van which you would pay cash or px, so he is quite happy that if we sell our van in the meantime we still pay the agreed price, so needless to say we are trying to do just that as I'm sure we'd get more than the px price, however our budget is on the assumption we'll be px'ing our current van.

Re all the other equiptment there is another site called ukcampsite which if you go to have loads of good info about what you need re equiptment, look in the tips section under caravannning.

We progressed onto a caravan from firstly camping in tents and then a trailer tent, so we had a fair bit of equiptment to start with, but we did get some bits, when we got our first van, the dealer we used then, gave us a discount in their shop, although I'm not sure how much we really saved. But no harm in asking the dealer after all you'll be spending a lot of money with him.

There are plenty of places to get your gear from look at Towsure on the web, they have a few shops as well, but that will give you an idea for prices for the equiptment.

It is worth considering second hand for your awning, if you're getting one, we have always got second hand ones, and with a bit of shoppiong around, got really good ones for less than half the price of a new one.

Good luck
