My van was purchased new in July 2005. It has covered approx 3500 miles in that time, has stood over winter on these tyres

(although turned every month) Is it now time to fit a new set of tyres for safety reasons?? We are taking the van down to the French Alpes in July and would like to be on the safe side.

What is the general life of a CARAVAN tyre???

If there are any signs of cracking or buldging, get them changed. Other than that, my local dealer recommended I change the caravan tyres every 5 years.

As Al says, every five years as long as no cracks or bulges appear before that. Caravan tyres are like the rear tyres on your car, they don't come under the same amount of stress as the front ones and the tread will not wear out as quickly. Just remember you cannot check to see the inner walls, that is why the Manufactures/Dealers recommend changing at five years from the date of manufacture,

best regards, Martin

Yes, unless the caravan tyres have been subjected to extreme conditions, five or six years is about right. Here in Germany the caravan would fail the equivalent of an MOT if the tyres are older than 6 years.
