giovanni,at least some see sense and are prepared to accept others views.I don't see why it is always hit the motorist.

On which point Mr Blair I see slipped through last month 'laws' that allow the police/local authorities to place camers wherever they like and hide them.Yet more progress how they work out this will cut down accidents I have no idea if you dont see them and whilst looking out for itinerant pedestrians your speed creeps up more mony in the coffers.

It is difficult not to be cynical as to why we have so many speed cameras these days. Last year the main thoroughfare from Nantwich to Crewe was made a 20mph limit. This part is about two miles long and now has 9 sets of traffic lights. The traffic was always very heavy and congested so if you actually did 20mph you were lucky. When this road was developed they put in ramps which are quite wide and on the same level as the footpaths, so now people just walk out onto these and use them as crossings, the result being they are more likely to get hit than they ever were before.

We also have severe humps through the town centre and all that happens is that the boyracers excellerate like mad

between the humps and after they have finished. It is these drivers who should be targeted not the majority of us who drive sensibly anyway.

We have lived in Nantwich for 27 years and only once has there been a pedestrian fatality and that was when a lorry driver became unwell at the wheel. If speed limits, ramps etc. were really for the protection of the individual, we would have to have ramps on every road in the country.

Road users and pedestrians should be responsible for themselves and that includes children being taught at an early age to be road aware.

Chrissylissie,Firstly why are you not at work on overweight caravanners,you are not being paid to gossip on here.

Obviously i agrre with what you say and you raise a valid point with these raised wide flat speed bumps that are the same level as the pavement and for some strange reason pedestrians seem to think they are crossings.As a trainee driving instructor I have studied all the different types of crossing and these ain't one of em!

Does not mean that drivers have to crawl along at 1 mph.

We may have more traffic than years ago but in days gone by cars did not stop as well as they do now or handle as well. Also the cars build was less pedestrian friendly than today, we have always had children and vulnerable people using roads so why does the motorist have pay the price.

Many motorists and people happy to use cars are quite vulnerable when they exit their vehicles and become pedestrians and how many of them are calling for these nanny state measures.

Plotter, did he drive a lemon yellow Anglia with a pink roof and daisies on the doors?

That was my first car and you had time to prey and chant the Lord's prayer when braking hard and my poor old dad had it scrapped when I took it home from college.

James had a Wolsey Hornet that did a O - 100 mph plus in a a seveties deep breath and took a month to stop even aided by the hand brake.

My Clio now nearly stands on its nose as I'm sure most modern cars do.

Memories,A friend of mine had and Anglia 105e with 1600 engine with twin webber carb which went like the proverbial of a shovel.We need you on the 'Big' thread to help ward off trouble makers.

If you all worked as hard as you talked the company operating under the big thread would be wortth a fortune. Now less of all this empty talk and get back to work - or sorry I forgot - if you should read the big thread I ahve sacked the lot of you. Incidently shouldn't we be posting under "Chit Chat" rather than "General"?

Hello Plotter,

I tend to concur with your headline views about the plethora of recently introduced 20mph limits. However I see it from a slightly different point of view.

I received some information a few weeks ago, and I can't vouch for its authenticity, but the sentiment seems to ring true.

Apparently the speed limit of a road determines how frequently the responsible authority has to survey the surface condition, and the speed limit also determines the acceptable condition, the inference being that higher speed limits requires better condition and surveys carried out more frequently.

My Local authority has decreased the speed limits on many roads in the area. Many dual carriageways used to be derestricted, but are now down to 50mph, some down to 40, and many 30mph areas down to 20 and covering an increasing extensive area.

Bearing in mind that the duty to inspect and repair to a higher standard also falls with reduced speed limits, the council is seeking to convince everybody that they have made significant inroads to the shortcomings of the road infrastructure.

"We now have only a 15month backlog of road repairs compared to a 24 months back log last year".

Looking at the audit figures the council spent less on actual road repairs, but a little more on admin, and significantly more on Community traffic calming projects, and road signage.

In truth, they have brushed the problem under a bigger mat.
