Just for a bit of fun and to see who somes up with the most innovative and plausible answer. At the moment in the good old USA there is concern about 2012 etc plus blah blah due to their own stupidity and belief in Hollywood scenarios.
However we do have the possibility of solar flares which at their worse can damage electronic systems due to the electromagnetic pulse that they can generate which will destroy transistors and ICs. No effect on valve radios etc that do not have any transistors in their circuitry.
If there was a massive solar flare that knocked out all transistors and ICs, this means the cutting off of most means of communication and also knocking off all utilities including water as these are controlled by electronics, how would you cope?
You probably could not buy from a supermarket as no tills and even if you could, for the cashier to add up manually may be beyond their capabilities and they would take ages. Then you have to carry the stuff home as your car no longer works. Your home is cold as no electric or gas, but you need to warm up. Eventually no more tin food or other available.
We thought of being parked up near a stream and having an air rifle for hunting to take care of our most basic needs plus a small veggie patch. Unfortunately as we have an ALDE heating system it may not work on gas as it is controlled by electronics so that may be a bit of a no no! After all they managed in the old days without computers, electric, gas and running water.
What would you do to survive for several months?
