Hi - just wondered if anyone can help - we are planning on storing our caravan at a local CaSSOA registered storage site. We will get insurance for our caravan - but were wondering if such places need to have their own insurance and to what extent - if any - it covers our van against damage on site, theft etc......Sorry to be so vague and clueless - we are new to all of this!

Hi Fiona,

A very interesting question, on the site we store our van at on the entrance gate is a big sign that says vans are stored entirely at the owners own risk.

Now I wonder if that's the site owner or the caravan owner !!!

Hello Fiona,

Most companies have to take out insurance to meet a number of legal requirements. Sadly it is not a legal requirement for storage companies to hold insurance against the loss or damage to their customers property whilst in their custody - though some might, and in my view all should.

Many insurance companies will not cover your caravan unless it is stored at a 'secure site'. CaSSOA sites are supposed to meet the insurance companies specifications, and by inference that means they should be secure!

But are they? If your caravan is damaged by an intruder who gains access to the site, who has failed? Well obviously the site, because the security measures have failed to prevent the intrusion, So why are you expected to cover the cost of the damage through your insurance?

It is my view that if the advertising or the name of a site includes the word secure or any other words or phrases to encourage you to think it offers improved security, then the site owners should take responsibility for any failure of their security and indemnify their customers.

Thanks - we rang a local storage site - CaSSOA registered -and they said the only thing they were insured for with regards to caravans on site was fire. We are more confused than ever - if someone damages our caravan whilst in their care, or if they damage it when moving it - then who is liable for the damage?? Seems the whole question of insurance is a confusing one - will just have to make sure we are fully insured, regardless of where we store our c'van.

Hi Fiona

Some good advice has been given to you, read the small print etc.

We insured our new Abbey 495 with C&CC Clubcare when we took delivery in March. The policy we had was neither the cheapest or the most expensive. The important thing is that we insured 'new for old' and when our caravan was unfortunately flooded in June their loss adjuster was on site within a week, within a fortnight we had been told that our caravan was a total loss, and last week Clubcare told us we could go ahead and choose a new caravan.( We are waiting for the 2008 models out in September) Clubcare have proved by their actions that they are a reputable company, and I would imagine that CC insurance is as good.

Hope this helps

Also regarding you question on who is responsible for your caravan at the storage site, ring both CC insurance and Clubcare and simply ask them. I don't think that they will be trying to 'catch you out.' I found the staff that I have spoken to both honest and pleasant. Good luck, let us know how you get on.
