Hello Tara

Welcome to the forum and may you and your family enjoy many happy times in your caravan.

Please do us a favour and knock your caps lock off when posting on forums because otherwise it appears to other forum members that you're shouting at them.

Now, to try and answer your question.

If possible connect your electric hook up lead (ehu) to your caravan when you are at home to bring your caravan fridge down to temperature before you set off.

After you have hitched your caravan up ready to tow by connecting the grey lead to the connector on your car or 13 pin plug for later models your caravan fridge should stay cool during your journey.

To keep food frozen during your journey it might be better to buy a coolbox for your car and put the frozen food at the bottom with freezer blocks from your supermarket on top of the food. Take a limited amount of frozen food with you at first so that you find out how much you can keep frozen. If it starts to defrost then you could serve it as your meal after you arrive at your destination and it isn't wasted.

It's possible to download locations of supermarkets complete with maps so that you can stock up after you have settled in.

Hope this helps

Hello Tara

I am not so sure about keeping food properly frozen in most caravan fridges. Most models do have a small freezer section, but they can be temperamental in operation, and they are not as cold as your freezer at home.

I echo Parksy's suggestion of pre-cooling the fridge, and transporting a few essential frozen goods for immediate use, but then it makes sense to use the shops close to your destination.

From a slightly different perspective, if you try to take a lot of food with you, then it might surprise you how heavy it is. By only taking the essentials for say one-days provisions, you can save weight and improve the tow-ability of your caravan.

hi Tara,

i think most advice will be the same as that above. we have two young children and tend only to store ice-pops in the small freezer, everything else we buy fresh! most things will last a couple of days in the fridge once defrosted. Enjoy the produce of the locality is my advice and leave frozen food for quick meals after work when home!!!

Sorry about the caps lock business, new to the site.

thx all for the info, i was planning on just taking a few things to see us through the weekend and then doing a bit of a shop when on site.

I will just have to buy a cool box.
