Hi all, I am going to be on here asking several questions which to others may seem daft. We have just bought our first caravan and collect it in the next couple of weeks. We are looking at insurance and are getting conflicting information about what is the minimum equipment and what type we need for security. Some want to know the type make and model of all the security devices and others dont, some are asking if we have wheel locks, hitch locks and any other locks, also where we are going to be storing it when not in use and what the site have regarding security. We have done quotes for storage sites that are CaSSOA registered and ones that are not and the difference in fees to insurance savings is minimal. It is a mine field to newby caravanners, help would be much appreciated.

Hi, and the first thing is to say that its daft not to ask the questions, so ask away. Not all insurance offers are the same. To some extent you get what you pay for, and if you read many of the threads both here on PC and on other forums, you will see that some insurers get better reviews than others. There is a lot to say for going with one of the specialist club insurers who understand the needs of the caravanner. With regards the essential security measures, you have already found that differnt insurers have differnt requirements but in the end you must conform to what your chosen insurer wants, and then add anything else that you pesonally feel is necessary. Your choice of storage site is again what gives you most confidence, though I personally do belive that CaSSOA accreditation necesarily provides any improved security over alternative sites, but they tend to charge more!

Please ensure that the caravan is insured before you collect it as we have read many stories of people losing high value caravans that were not insured.

Have to agree with the prof with insurance you get what you pay for, The two clubs offerings are probably the best policies on the market. If you are not in either then NFU Mutual are probably the best insurer and the extra is worth paying for.
If you are looking at storage check security, These are often large open areas and you need to be sure on this one. Ask the operators what if any theft or vandalism problems they have had. The advantage of CASSOA sites is generally they are of a good standard and secure but others may be just as good.
Alkl locks buy you time rather than anything else. Sold Secure is usually the standard insurers require and if a device does not have this accreditation I would ignoire it. Many thieves have the ability nto tow away a caravan secured by a hitchlock so they are only any good as an addition to a wheel lock. From what I have seen the Milenco and Nemisis wheel locks are among the best but check with your insurer before buying one to see what they require.
Hope this helps.
