Is it a scam?

Hi everyone, I am in the process of selling my caravan it is on ebay and it is in the caravan trader this week, also i have it on caravans4u, i received an email from a JMPorter last week asking me how much the caravan was, (i put the price in the ad) then he emailed me asking for my name and address, (Ididnt disclose this) I asked him if he wanted to come and view the caravan, he said no, I had another email yesterday from him stating that he would send me a cheque for the full asking price, He said he was working for a client and he would take commission from any amount above the asking price, I know this all sounds a bit confusing but i am puzzled I think it is a great big scam can anyone fill me in.

YES it is definately a scam. The cheque he sends you appears to clear in your bank, you let the caravan go and then you find you have received not one penny for the sale of it. (Or something like that).

Don't reply to any more emails from this low life.

Hi Yorkie,

It does sound a bit unusual, but could be genuine.

You would need to give out your name and address to any genuine buyer in any case would you not ? So that they can come and view the van. So don't really see what extra risk you you are putting yourself to, by giving that out.

You're obviously not going to let them away with the van until the cheque has cleared, so nothing to lose there either.

If it's a scam, what's their angle ?

Having said all that, if you're not desperate to sell and are worried, ignore the offer.

Good luck.

This is without doubt a well known scam. I strongly advise that you report it to the police who have a special department to deal with these scams.

SCAM WARNING Watch out for emails offering to pay you more than the asking price of your item. These are mass emailings from abroad trying to get sellers to pay back the difference. Once you have done so you would find that their cheque has bounced.

Slightly left field but ,

according to my bank , it can take anything upto 6 weeks for the monies from a cheque to actually end up fully in your possession.

Banks , depending on your credit status with them , will usually allow you to draw against the cheque within a few days (mines 3 working). But they told me that should the funds not transferred from the account the cheque was raised against I'd be liable to repay any amount I used of the original sum.

That's useful to know.
