Is it me just being a grumpy old man? The wife and I were thinking of going to the caravan show at the SECC in Glasgow this weekend, then I looked at the entrance price.... £9, £9 each plus parking. So that's over £22 to go shopping! If I want a new van or awning I will go on line to find what I want and save myself £22.Is it me?

no, yer right scott, just have a peek at scotch lads recent post re the show. im maybe going up on the train tomorrow, but im in two minds now, could be doing other things after reading scotch lads account. i suppose its ok if yer going specifically to try and get a bargain at the trade stalls for something specific, but if its just to browse, then have a day visiting the dealers for free and see the same merchandise.

i went to the scottish motorcycle show up until a few years ago, got to the point i was paying for parking and increases on the gate each year, if i wasnt going to buy something from the stands then i was paying all that money to look at bikes which would be in the dealers within a fortnight, no contest.

Guys,

Don't make your mind up based on my opinion. I actually booked my tickets in advance so got them cheaper, and we went by train, so yes, it cost us about

scotch lad, im not making my mind up based on yer opinion, was only letting scott know you had been and what yer thoughts were. as i said in my earlier post, i went to the annual bike shows for years, then not too long ago there was a new model came out, was highlighted in all the magazines and on the net. i saw pictures of it at the earls court show and manchester show, newcastle show, the list goes on. so, when it came time for the great annual scottish show me and my mates were so looking forward to casting our eye over this marvelous piece of machinery and hoped to get a sit on it. huh, some chance, after paying the entrance fee we were greeted with an arena filled with small time dealers with korean machinery. as mentioned, if its to have a peek at the new caravans, then wait till they are in the dealers and spend a pleasant afternoon going around them all for free.

Her Ladyship keeps harping on about going to the NEC but to be honest I cannot see the point. We bought a new van last year so I have no desire to have a look at others now. Besides, I might see one better and regret buying this one but I doubt it.

We have all the kit and even if we needed some and went to the NEC hoping to buy it cheaper it would have to be a good discount to offset the admission price plus you could have two nights on a site for the entry cost.

Hi,

Do the exibitors pay as well? Or do they get a free pitch? Or do the organisers pay them to exibit?

There is a loophole in the Planning Laws that allows a piece of land to be used for ANY purpose for 28 days in any year, apart from Motor Racing, Clay Pigeon Shooting, and Open Air Market, which are restricted to 14 days.

It strikes me that somebody with about 5 acres of flat field ....

You also have to think if some one gives you a fantastic deal that you cant resist , it may be from a dealer the other end of the country to you. For any service and warranty work could cost you a fortune in fuel as well as taking a lot of time up.I made that mistake and had to go from Derby to Bristol when problems arose.

I find the cost of getting there and getting in comes to more than what savings you may make on any kit you intend to buy. It might be worth it if you are buying a new caravan/motorhome but if its accessories you are looking for the cost of the tickets/travel wipes out any discounts. Kit at the Manchester show was very limited and the prices were higher than if I bought it elsewhere. If I've got a few quid to waste I may go for the day out, but otherwise I would rather spend the same money on renovating the bathroom in our caravan.
