Is my RCCB Faulty?

Hello All. Repaired the thermistors in the back of my Truma fire today and when I put the fire on to 2000 the power tripped and I've not been able to get it back on. I've disconnected all appliances in the caravan either by unplugging them or separating the connector with no joy and so.... Finally I've removed the busbars from the consumer unit and having turned on the power and flicked the RCCB, I get no power reading on the upper terminals with my multi meter. I'm now assuming my RCCB has failed - would this be correct?

Hello Naysoft.

Do you realise that you are dealing with mains electrical equipment?

I can only base my assessment of your capability based on what you posted, and I have serious reservations about the components you have replaced in the heater, which as far as I know are not Thermistors. So what have you fitted?

The fact that after fitting them the RCCD seems to have tripped, which an electrician would not think the RCCD was faulty but more likely the repair done to the heater should be under suspicion.

An electrical would have methods of testing the RCD without dismantling it.

I am really concerned that you don't know what you are doing and must place yourself or your family in serious danger of electrocution.

Please do no more, disconnect the caravan from the mains supply and arrange to have it checked and repaired by a qualified electrician.

I'm sorry to be so blunt but your post has left me no option.

Totally support Prof's comments.
Having said that, if you have no voltage reading on the input to the RCD (RCCB is long out of date) then has the incoming supply tripped or a fuse blown? (For info the power usually comes in on the top connections of an RCD and out onto the busbar for distribution to the MCBs at the bottom.)

Evening all - maybe my terminology was incorrect - it was the temperature control limiters - purchased as part of a kit with the replacement gasket. Whilst I appreciate your concerns - I merely wish to verify that the RCCB is defective. Incoming supply is fine but the switch is not activating the feed on the output of the RCCB. I removed the busbars to rule out any faulty components elsewhere in the caravan and am assuming that the RCCB is faulty - merely seeking confirmation. If the RCCB is faulty the van will most likely need a new consumer unit given its age and I would use an electrician for that. Many thanks for your replies and concern.

Unfortunately we are not in a position to verify what is faulty as we are not able to physically check the components.

If the RCCB is faulty ( and I'm not confirming it is) that does not mean a new consumer unit would be necessary as the RCCB can be independently replaced.

I would still need to try and ascertain what might have caused it to trip. before jumping to the conclusion the RCCB is faulty.

Hi Prof John - The heating tested fine at 500w & 1000w - it was when I tried 2000W that it tripped out and never came back on. It's entirely possible that one of the heater elements was leaking to earth and the unit needs a new heater element too. The caravan is 20 years old so it wouldn't surprise me. We've used the gas fire for the last couple of years since the electric function stopped working.

I've found similar RCCB units are still for sale so as you say - the existing consumer unit may be usable. Given there is nothing attached to the RCCB presently and it won't reset, my conclusion is that it's faulty. Many thanks for your feedback.

Its not unheard of for and RCCB to age fail. And heater elements can also fail, but I do stress that unless you are fully competent with electrical work, for your safety plese refer it to someone who is.
