We have been thinking about moving from a full size awning to one of the new extended porch awnings. This summer we tried outa cheap 300x240 nylon awning (£65) just to see how we got on, and even with two dosg etc it was okay. So having seen an Isabella Magnum pitched up we liked the overall design. The owners were pleased with it but said they were worried at times that it did not have abuilt in storm strap system.

I would welcome any user views on Magnums and how best to guy them to prevent storm damage.

Cheers

Hi Clive

We are on our second Magnum (we made the mistake of selling the first one and trying to use a full sized awning paired with a lightweight porch for shorter breaks - didn't suite our caravanning style) so have used them on and off for about 6 years.

We must have been lucky because never in that time have we had any need to use additional pegging - rock pegs in the main peg loops has always been more than enough in even strong breezes. However, in case the wind really does look like it is going to get up I always carry three strong, long, guy lines and storm pegs. If I ever needed them I would tie the guys in a figure of eight around the pole joints at the two front corners and the middle front and peg out from there. So the strain is entirely on the frame rather than the fabric.

I am pretty sure that when we first bought an isabella awning I read that this technique was their recommended method of dealing with storm guys and that they warned against straps that went over the fabric, or against having guys sewn on to the fabric.

I am sure that Isabella themselves will happily sell you their "Storm securing kit" (see http://62.242.39.22/downloads/pdf/isabella/sparepart/Isabella-accessories-spareparts-2010.pdf) if you want the pukka thing, but mine are just ones I gathered over time for very little money.

Cheers

We have an early Magnum that we got in 2002 and at quick reckoning its been put up about 80 times and been up for about 240 nights.

We rarely feel the need for any supplementary retaining aids.

We have some near rope like guys that I think Isabella called "Typhoon" guys, a set of three and have used these probably no more than half a dozen times when dreadful weather was promised. They tie to the frame, one at each front corner and the third on the front apex.

It is generally rock solid, however the two vertical drops against the van can move a lot in gusty conditions. I have never had cause to doubt its integrity in any weather so far encountered except once having to use a broom up inside to ease off a great weight of hail stones.

The isabella storm straps are great, they fit around the corners and middle frame so nothing to trip over, rub against your awning or flap in the wind.A heavy duty item which are cast not bent steel plate and will last for years.

I have a magnum and us it all the time.

Hi Clive

We used our Isabella Magnum at the New England Bay CC Site recently. It's a notoriously windy site but on this occasion the weather excelled itself!

I set up the awning with the Isabella storm straps, which are fitted to the inside of the awning. After five days of blowing a hooley, the only bits that had moved were the poles against the 'van.

Needless to say, I'm really impressed with the whole setup and cannot recommend this awning enough.

Having used an Isabella Ambasador full awning for years, we have now decided to go for a porch awning, and I have just ordered a new Magnum with IXL poles for our new Vermont - when the van arrives. I have used Isabella storm straps for years, and have always fitted them internally, and they have been great. We did have some pole damage earlier this year in gales, but the storm straps never failed. Isabella cost a lot more than most (all?), but they do make a good awning.
