Isle of Wight

We plan to take a trip in early June to the Island. Does anyone have any experience of either Whitefield Forest Park or The Orchards Caravan Park. Be most grateful for any comments for or against. We are a retired couple, no kids, no dog. We plan to go after the Spring Holiday week when the children are back in school. Thanks JohnW

Whilst staying in Dorset my wife and I spent a day in the Isle of Wight and were glad to get back to the mainland. Cowes was very nice but everywhere was shut by 6:00pm. We had booked to come back on the 10:00pm ferry from Yarmouth but managed to get a crossing earlier. The ferryman asked us what we intended doing until late as he said the islend shut early and was not set up for holiday makers.

Hi John

Both parks are nice, The Orchards is a larger commercial site, has a swimming pool, not far from the Yarmouth ferry, local pub. Whitefield's is a quieter site, closer Ryde, to beaches, the downs and Tesco. It just depends what your after. Both have nice walks.

we have been to the isle of Wight twice and really enjoyed it ,a visit to the old battery by the needles is a good day out ,also a ride over the cliff tops on the ski lift is a bit scary my wife kept her eyes closed all the way ,the visit to the garlic is also worth a visit ,my breath stunk for a week ,and yes we stayed at the Orchards ,we were pitched right at the bottom of the site , i had to find the hook up box ,wich was on the next pitch in the bushes almost invisible , a lot of the pitches needed a bit of tlc ,i felt out of place i think we were the only people with out a dog personally i woudnt stay there again , there is a CC site on the isle try that

we were at the orchards caravan park last september we can highly recomend it the new toilet block is exelent the wardens are so helpfull and it can be so peasefull

I've stayed at Whitefield Forest Park site and it is lovely although there is an awful amount of shade. Some people prefer that but I like a bit more sun, especially in the evenings. The toilet block is new and very well appointed and the site itself is very well laid out. No long rows of caravans all with their jockey wheels in lines. It is well placed for Sandown and even if you don't like beaches, the walk along the front is really good. Also well placed for Ryde and there is a big Tesco just around the corner.

Have just returned from the IOW and stayed this time at Whitefield Forest. Really great site lovely setting, good facilities. We are also retired and wanted a nice peaceful base to explore the Island. No where is that far on the IOW just over 24 miles to the Needles was about our longest trip. Yes the Island is quieter than the mainland but that is what we wanted. We managed to eat out quite often at pubs. I would not say the Island shuts up early or is not for visitors. We have also stayed at Southlands (now a Caravan Club site) and at the Orchards both of which were also very good.I should think just after the bank holiday would be very good. I know that Whitefield and the Orchards are virtually full for the bank holiday week.
