I've got a Monterey LTD (LWB), which is really an Isuzu Trooper only under another name and I'm very happy with it as a towcar (had it for 6 years already, just for that purpose). I'd advise against a SWB because the ride could be choppy.

I can't give you any information on mpg for the 3.1 diesel, though, because mine is a 3.5 petrol.

Hi,

I towed all last season with a SWB trooper 3.1 and have now traded it for a LWB Bighorn. I have just aquired the BH and have only managed a brief sojorn with the van - suffice to say that it towed superbly but no indication of MPG as it was only a mile or so.

I found that the SWB (manual) averaged 30 mpg solo and 25 towing. I would expect a little less with the BH as it is auto and weighs more. However in the couple of tankfulls I have used so far it seems to be keeping up to 30 mpg so maybe I will be suprised. First outing will be next week and a 300 mile round trip, so ask me then.

Regarding the 3.1 Troop generally I would say they are hard to beat for reliability and towing ability - I should know too as I have towed with most of the credible opposition i.e. Jeeps, Shoguns and Landrovers. The LWB pitches up and down markedly less than the LWB which was very apparent from my short tow so I would endorse Lutz's similar comments. He has had his for five years by the way so that tells you something!

Final note on economy, it does of course depend on what you are towing. My figures are for towing a Bailey Oklamhoma at around 1500kg, when towing a two horse trailer the consumpton plumets below 20 mpg

Good choice of motor and have fun.

Hi again Peter,

If you are still interested, have just come back from a long weekend with the "new" Bighorn and am pleasantly suprised with the MPG.

Brimmed it with liquid gold after 235 miles of mixed motorway and Welsh hilly backroads and it took 48 litres. That's about 22mpg which aint bad for a 12 year old 2,200kg motor pulling a 1,500kg van. Havn't fueled since I got back but looking at the guage I'd say we bettered that comming back down the M4 with a tail wind.

No big 4x4 is going to be "economical" but I can live with 22mpg especially as it is such a superb towcar.

PS.Just brimmed it again in prep for weekend and it took 37.5 L and done 208 miles so that's 25mpg - blimey I bet thats as good as these newfangled Sorentitowrag or even X file jobbies and I could get 10 Bighorns for what some of them cost new!

Does this mean you have decided to keep it after all Jo?
