Italy - The 1st Time

We are planning our first caravan trip to Italy, spending time near Lake Garda and somewhere convenient for getting into Florence. Neither of us can take the heat of mid-summer or madly busy/ overcrowded sites so which time would be better - May/June or late August/ early September?
Any site recommendations would be welcome too!
Thanks, in anticipation.
Mike

Mike we went to Lake Garda last year early July staying at Camping sereno in Moniga del Garda, weather hot but there was the customary thunderstorms albeit during the late evening and night. This year because we enjoyed the area so much we are going back to Garda but staying in Camping Du Parc next to Lazise. It is close to Lazise so gives us the opporunity to have a stroll in on an evening.Great area,we've done Como and Maggiore but we think Garda is the best.Nearly forgot to mention we are going middle of August this year and by then things should have quietnened down, go for it you wont be disappointed.

Mid to late September would be a good choice if you still want sunshine but not the intense heat that normally comes with July and August, and indeed early September.
Although as you are going down to Florence as well, it could still be very warm in mid September, but at least the evenings are cooler so sleeping comfortably would be a bonus at that time of year......
We have been going to Italy for decades, and in all seasons too, but normally go mid august, but as we get older the heat doesn't seem to agree as well as it did with the Wife. stayed at du pac in late September 2008, plenty warm enough for me to scare people with my shorts in the day, but a lot cooler in the evenings.
