Hi there, what is the best route to go to italy i am going to Ravenna to visit realitves with the caravan. It is best to go via Austria Or switzerland as both have vignette to pay not sure which is cheaper. Or is it best to go down through france paying the Tolls, and are there any good non Toll roads to use. Have done this route years ago without the caravan, but cannot remember the best way. We are travelling in July.

Its really a question of whether its best to go a shorter distance and pay tolls or a longer journey with more fuel to avoid tolls. You are right that both Austria and Switzerland have a vignette system. however in Switzerland you have to buy one for both car and caravan and there is only a choice of a full year. Austria on the otherhand you only need one for the car and you can buy short tern ones relatively cheaply but you do pay addition tolls on the likes of the Brenner Motorway Pass although still cheaper than the Swiss system. As to the main part of the journey you could travel down through Germany which would be toll free.

I agree with David the Brenner is much cheaper option and beautiful too travelling thro Germany and Austria to it as Fuel is much cheaper in these countries too. Austrian fuel is cheaper than German. Current price of Diesel here in Austria today is the 96 pence a litre. Much cheaper than the UK.

If you need some good sites to stay at look at my website http://www.dvthompson.webs.com for journeys we have made in this direction.

Thanks for that, so is the Brenner ok with the caravan? Sounds like Austria is the way to go can you get the vignette as you go in to Austria like you do in Switzerland or do you have to buy in advance?

Just wanted to say wow, looked at the link above and you seem like you have travelled loads. We have done a fair bit in both tent and caravan, but have never had the time for longer than 3 weeks. But i am looking at the sites you suggested. Do you book or just turn up. Also where did you find them all by pot luck or a book?

The Brenner is fine for caravans and a very beautiful road. We did a trip to Italy last year visiting the three main lakes and Venice. You can read about it here which also has details of the sites we stayed at. The Italian Blog

Err, round trip going through Austria adds 280 miles to you journey[140] each way so straight away you have nulled any cost advantage of taking that route, against the shorter route in fuelcosts. Indeed once you add the Austrian vignette x2 if you do not return in 10 days and X2 the Brenner pass too. add onto that the extra mileage of toll roads in Italy too, and frankly the Austrian route is dearer than going straight through Switzerland, even after forking out for two swiz vignettes.

The route through Swiss is not so pretty though and the tolls would not add up to the same as Switzerland going through Germany and Austria. Deisel is much more expensive in Swiss came from there 4 days ago.

Sorry Sue I could not reply to your comment as had no internet for 4 days. I found all the Sites in ACSI Camping Card or the Caravan Club Europe 2.

We are not in the Black Forest and at Alisehof for the 4 time very good indeed.i

Dianne, you would found it still cheaper going through Switzerland and quicker. The difference in diesel price is 10 cent per litre, assuming you use Austria Euro fuel rate against the swizz franc, but You also using more fuel, at least 4.5 gallons more!going the Austrian way each way, [about 20 litres]or about 20 euro,s, so your saving of 10 cent a litre is actually a minus 18 euro's each way. plus you would need to buy more fuel in Italy which is dearer, pay more tolls in Italy too using the Austrian route, which adds another 20 plus euro's each way.

TWO Austrian vignettes and two Brenner pass tolls, adds up to over 30 euro's, assuming you are using this route both ways and are staying in Italy for more than 10 days.

So that extra cost adds up to 100 euro's approx, and two switz vignettes on the other hand, does not cost anywhere near 100Euro's.

But the Austrian route is prettier.

Looks like a difficult one. Thought i had decided on Austria now not so sure, have been through switzerland loads of times without the caravan, with a tent. Love it so much have loads of sites i love to go to, so now undecided. Have to think about it, as one way outways the other way.
