Having acquired an almost new porch awning I want to connect the poleswith springs (which I already have) the qestion is what is the best way to fit them?

Are they like the pair below that just push one end into each pole ?

They are like those except they didi not come with the gizmo to poke them in with,also how far do they have to go in.

I would imagine half of the spring into each leg to start & then push a little more into each leg to put some tension on the spring.
