Thanks to all everyone who has patiently advised me on setting up my caravan satellite system - I'VE DONE IT.

Over Easter we were away for 10 nights at Cae Mawr CC site on Anglesey and so that gave me the opportunity to have a good long session with my Sat equipment. I have a 66cm Maxview dish, LNB and tripod, bought secondhand a few months ago from another caravanner, and a new Humax HD box. I got the correct bearing using my compass and then laid out a garden cane along this bearing, Thanks JTQ for that suggestion. I then set up the dish on that bearing and with the dish roughly vertical. My son had set up the HD box using his Sky dish and so I connected to this and switched to the Diagnostics screen. After lots of slowly swinging the dish at varying elevations and skews I finally got a good signal strength and quatlity readings on the TV diaganostics display - it did take about 2 hours to achieve this!!!

I was able to receive a large number of both Freesat and FTA stations. I then pegged down the tripod with rock pegs and we sat back and enjoyed the TV programmes for the rest of our hols. Despite some wet and windy weather we had few problems with the satellite reception until the wind began gusting to gale force last Monday. I then took down the dish and packed it away and reverted to the freeview box signal from the van's Status 520 aerial. It was a good job that I did take the dish down then as the wind continued to strengthen and a couple of neigbouring 'vans lost their awngings.

So again a BIG THANK YOU to everyone who advised me. I know feel reasonably confident that I can set up the system successfully again and we are looking forward to using it in the UK and on the Continent in the summer.

Incidentally I never did find the electronic, plug-in, Maxview satellite signal finder to be of much use.

Regards

Tim

Glad your sorted my OH is allways alot happier with a good picture to watch corrie, i too didnt use the finder much cope what i did was when i had a good picture i placed the compass on the fold down arm with the lnb on the end and i marked a line on the compass with a permanent marker, this means everytime i set it up i Just line the compass up with the mark and the fold down arm and a couple of tweaks and i get the picture again,

HI! Tim great that you got your system working ,remember that wherever you put your compass if its near to any metal you WILL NOT get a correct reading from it due to the magnetic field being distorted by the metal . Also when i set my signal strenth it does not have to be 100% i get a great picture with my strenth at 55% or over

cheers Duggie

To avoid any steel bits in the dish biasing the compass is the main reason why I first lay a plant pot cane on the ground to indicate the required sight-line. Secondly its length makes it an easier sight-line target to use than the small compass.

An IXL awning pole [veranda]works just as well.
