Jaguar Estate as a towcar ?

Afternoon,

We currently tow with a long wheelbase Shogun which is a little long in the tooth and uses alot of diesel.

We use an old Volvo S40 at all other times, only using the Shogun for towing. The Volvo has a few things wrong with it and I'm thinking of going back to just one car for everyday use and towing.

I think that the best compromise I can come up with, is an estate of some sort. Our van is 1440kg MTPLM ( is that the correct abreviation ? ). Been looking at Audi A4, Saab and now like the look of the Jag estate.

Does anyone have any views or experience of this as a towcar ?

I also prefer the smoother petrol engines, is there a huge difference in towing ability compared to a diesel ?

Thanks in advance,

Alex.

I've had 2 Jag X-types & both have been good cars. The first was a 2.5 petrol & now I have a 2.2d estate. The diesel is better pulling on the motorway & the gear ratios are better for towing but the 2.5 & 3.0 petrols all have permanent four wheel drive (40/60 torque split front to back) so are therefore much better on slippy fields etc. Both cars were rock solid pulling the van. Both were fault free other than a couple of small niggles fixed under warrenty. My 2.5 petrol averaged 27mpg solo & the 2.2d averages 40mpg.

Hi Glenn,

Thanks for your reply.

Any idea of the kerbweight of your estate ? I've been towing for 4 years now and have alot of miles under my belt, but still like the peace of mind of the 85% guide.

I've had a look at the " kerbweight " website, but nothing like getting it from the horses mouth, as the weights seem to be less than what I'd expect.

Looking for it to be 1700kg.

Don't worry if it's not to hand mate, I appreciate you reply.

Thanks again,

Alex.

No problem Alex,

According to the handbook the kerb weights of the estates are:-

2.2d manual 1585kg

2.5 & 3.0 petrol 1620kg manual or 1670kg auto.

Cheers

Glenn.
