Tomorrow I am picking up a Jeep Commander for a 48 hour test drive. On paper it looks like an excellant towcar.

Anybody know what are they like towing and mpg?

Hi Michael

Sorry I can't help with your question but most of the reports I have read say it is an excellent towcar.

I am really interested in the Commander and have booked a 48 hour test drive for 12th February (I work in Dublin most weeks and weekend test drives were booked up. I would be keen to learn how you get on with the test drive and what your thoughts on the car are.

Cheers

Richard

Hi Richard, The car is great to drive and the one I've got has all the toys possible. But!!

Very very thirsty. I did a test on the M20 this afternoon. Reset the computer, switched it to metric because I wasn't sure if it was reading US gallons or gallons and then did about 40 miles with crusie control on at 70mph. Just me in the car. The best it went to was 12 litres/100km. Most of the time it was between 12.2 and 12.5.

It could be because the engine is tight as it has only had 10 miles on it when I picked it up. Still disapointing though.

Hopefully somebody who has got one will be able to let us know what sort of mpg they are getting.

Michael....calculating your figures in MPG it averages out at fractionally over 23 mpg....What cc is the Commander and is it a petrol version?

If it is petrol it is about the same as you would get from most large 4x4s... Do they bring a diesel version into the uk?

Most of these are V6 Diesels unless you have big very fuel budget as the petrol is a 5 something litre Hemi lump.

Even new with that sort of MPG on the 25 its not likely to be to frugal loaded and with a caravan behind.

All I know is that a friend found it next to usless as a 7 seater unless carrying small kids and quickly swapped to a Disco 3 as his was returning under 20mpg towing a large single horse box.

His wife is the main driver of the car and tows the horse box as much as him. On a run they claim to get thirty plus and with the horse box around 23/25mpg they are caravanners as well and estimated they got around 27/28 mpg towing with there 4 kids via autoroute from Calais to Bordeaux and he tows at between 65 and 70 in France but is a very smooth economic driver.

Before Christmas at an event Steve spent much of the day pulling cars and horse box's out of deep mud including the horse box that belonged to the new owner of their Jeep. Even after a hard day chuggungin deep mud the Disco still gave about 22mpg.

ps. a message - Steves Mrs says, the Jeep was thirsty and had to many moans and groans and she would advise that you try them back to back if possible as the Disco has a smaller engine but feels more sure footed especially when towing, also the Jeep is faster solo but you can hear it. So the Disco is more enjoyable if you need to hustle along, last Thursday ( stormy day ) she want to Manchester and back from Wargrave and got 33/34mpg, the car as done just over 30k and seems better than when it was near new MPG wise.

Have you seen the Warranty Direct Reliabilty report today on Jeep and Land Rover.

Jeep came bottom with LR just behind, it might be worth some thought re resale values.

MoK,

The Jeep Commander has exactly the same Mercedes 3 litre V6 CDI as my E-class, except that the E-class has a fuel consumption figure of around 45 mpg when driven on cruise control - 70 mph for several miles on a flat motorway.

I don't think the Jeep has the new 7 speed automatic gearbox, retaining the 5 speed autobox from the previous generation ML- and E-class - so that probably accounts for a bit. But most of the fuel consumption difference will be from the extra weight, extra driven axle, the bigger frontal area, and the less aerodynamic shape.

Still the new V6 diesel is a real honey, 233 bhp and 550 NM torque. Towing is fairly effortless.

Thanks Michael

Sorry for the delay in responding but I am in the West of Ireland for a few days break and just logged on to a wireless network at the hotel.

Maybe I shouldn't say this but mpg does not really worry me - I have a 3.3 litre petrol Grand Voyager at the moment and I don't know what mpg that does solo never mind towing.

Its bound to be better than that whatever it does!!

Glad you liked it apart from that. I am looking forward to my test drive starting on the 12th Feb. There seems to be some good deals around at the moment and as you say full of toys for the price. I will let you know how I get on.

Cheers

Richard

Hi Richard,

After further research it would seem the engine returns better mpg after a few thosand miles. Around 28-30 extra urban and average 26.

Should get 21-24 towing.

For value for money (28,850 for the Limited 07 plate on the road with the Entertainment Pack)and towing ability I don't think there is anything better.

That is of course you need 7 seats.

Hi Michael

Thanks. I must admit that I am looking forward to the test drive on the 12th. We don't necessarilly need the 7 seats now but having had the Grand Voyager they do sometimes come in handy.

That's an excellent deal on the Limited with the entertainment pack. Was that from your local dealer?

Cheers

Richard

Hi Michael

Well I've had the test drive and was very impressed with the car. So impressed that I've ordered one. Had a look on the web at various deals but asked the local dealer what he would do. The upshot was that after negotiation I got the dealer to within a few hundred pounds of the web price. Although I've bought loads of things off the internet with no problem I wasn't sure about buying a car off the net so I've gone with the dealer. Peace of mind is worth a few hundred pounds I think.

Get the car on the 3rd March - can't wait. Just off to see the dealer about fitting a blue tooth hands free kit to it.

Enjoy your car when you get it.

Cheers

Richard

Hi all

As stated above I have ordered a Jeep Commander for delivery next weekend (3rd March). Because I am only at home at the weekends at the moment I have been trying to get as much organised as possible and one of the things I wanted sorted was fitting a towbar. As usual the dealer fitted option is very expensive but when we contacted a towbar specialist in our area (who regularly deal with our dealer and could pick up the car during the week next week and fit the towbar) they advised that whether we fit a detachable towbar or a swan neck towbar they will need to cut the bumper. They also advised that they need to cut the bumper on all Jeeps. I can't believe that Jeep would make cars that are really good tow tugs only for the bumpers to be cut when fitting towbars.

Has anyone out there any experience of this (either with a Commander or any other Jeep) and if so is there a solution? I don't want to have to cut the bumper in my new car.

I did npt have this problem with my Chrysler Grand Voyager which is obviously part of the same group and not sold primarily as a towing vehicle as it has a 1600kgs towing limit.

Many thanks

Richard

Many thanks

Hi Richard,

My Commander (Limited with Entertainment Pack - Black)is going to be delivered early March (no exact date yet) and the dealer quoted a lot of money to fit a towbar. I called my local towbar fitter and was quoted
