Hi Ed

I would suggest travelling up to Scotch Corner on the A1, then across the A66 to the M6, then follow North on the M6, A74(M), M73, then M80 to Stirling. Bypass Stirling on the M9 to junction 10, then follow the A84 for Callander/Crianlarich. You just continue north through some amazing scenery on the A84, a85 to Crianlarich, then the A82 through Tyndrum, Glencoe and a little way after Ballachulish to will come to the site.

I work in this area (central scotland) and travel this route a lot. If you have any other questions just ask.

Ewan

thankyou Ewan.....weve never been across a66 before, and werent sure if it was a good route, weve done st andrews before and obviously gone straight up to edinburgh and so on, and when we go to lakes we do a65 and then join m6 ...again because we would rather look at good scenery than lots of tarmac...thankyou again..i will be taking your advice...

I dont suppose it will matter which way you go to the M6, however, last October we took the caravan to York for a week. Onthe way home we decided to stop over at Silloth in Cumbria. We used the A66 from Scotch corner and found it a fairly good road (apart from the road works)

Once you get north of Stirling on the A84 the roads are all single carriageway, although good condition and wide enough to pass artics coming the other way without any problem

Hi Ed,

We are off to Scotland, again, in a couple of weeks! :O)

We always use the A66 and never have had a problem. It has stretches of dual carriage way, and is fairly hilly so you can overtake any dawdling lorries on the way.

Juction with M6 is sometimes very busy, you may be sat in a queue.

From N Yorkshire route works fine what Ewan suggested. In the past for a change of scenery we have also used the A68 which you join from the A1 just north of Darlington, takes you right up to Edinburgh where you pick up the M9, A84, A85 then A82. Often find that time wise this is the quickest way especially as there are road works on the A66 just passed Scotch Corner where it is being made duel carriageway.

Hi Ed,

I would agree with everything Ewan says. I live in Ayrshire and have been up that road many times, also been over the A66 with the van many times and never had a problem except once when we couldn't understand what was holding up the traffic until eventually we reached a section of dual carraigeway to discover it was 3 or 4 horse drawn gipsy caravans going to the Appleby horse fair. Enjoy Bunree

Hi Ed

Sorry didn't mention Bunree. This is a beautiful site up to high CC standards. Some pitches are are right on the edge of Loch Lhinnie and if the weather is kind to you will be marvelous. Fro my point of view the only drawback is that you need to use the car all the time going for messages etc.but that is only a minor problem.

Hi Ed

I've been to Bunree, and yes, it's beautiful. I would avoid the Loch Lomond (A82) road as the latter part has got some tight corners. Better to take the M80 and just after Stirling take the road to Callendar, then Lochearnhead and Crianlarich. Watch the bridge leaving Crianlarich as yiou have to take centre of the road and can't see oncoming trafic. After that it's plain sialing, spectacular scenery, and reasonably good roads.

Bunree's about 8 miles south of Ft William, so if you feel like it you can take the cable car up Ben Nevis. If you decide to go monster hunting, there's a smashing site just 17 miles south of Inverness (Loch Ness CAravan site) - all the pitches are on the loch side and your granddaughter can watch for Nessie. The owners are very friendly and there's a nice club on site for evening entertainment.

Happy holidays,

Charles

I also meant to add...........on the A85, a couple of miles north of Lochearnhead, at the top of Glen Ogle, there is a little snack bar......they do the most amazing venison burgers! There is a large layby on the opposite side of the road that will take a caravan.

I would like to point out I have no vestedinterest in the snack bar, I just have to stop there every time I pass. :>)

Ewan,

Apparently the snack bar is called "Ron & Sheila's".

Have you seen Ron's web site? He is an excellent photographer.

www.glenogle.info

I found it quite by chance.

Hi Maureen

Yes I have seen the web site. I work in that area quite a lot and Ron introduced me to the site one day I had stopped for a snack. He had displayed some of the photos at the snack bar.

Hi Ed, me again!

If you're coming up M74, leave it just north of Hamilton and take the M73. That takes you across to the A80/M80 (about 10 miles) and then it's a reasonably clear run to Stirling - less than an hour from when you take the M73.

After Callendar, you'll come to Loch Lubnaig and although it has it's bends (it wouldn't be scenic without them, would it?)it's not as bad as the top half of Loch Lomond.

You'll have a good run from Crianlarich to Tyndrum, then you cross Rannoch Moor - spectacular on a nice day, and god forsaken on a bad day, down into Glencoe and as you leave Glencoe there's a lovely site (Invercoe)on the shores of Loch Leven just before you come to Ballachullish Bridge. (www.caravancampingsites.co.uk)

If you can, try and go to Loch Ness - it's breathtaking and absolutely huge. It is claimed it has more water than all the lakes in England put together)and no one has ever managed to swim its length.

Have e great holiday

Charles.
