July edition PC mag Q & A

I have been reading the latest offering from PC and came across the Caravan Q & A, and in particular the advice not to put a solar panel on the roof of a caravan that has an aluminium roof as the roof can flex and split or even split the sealant and potentially lose the panel.

I am just wondering if this has actually happened to anyone? I bought 2 80w panels back in the winter and have been waiting to get some good weather to fit them but after reading this in the mag i am now worried about fitting them.

I believe the roof where i am going to fit these panels (Either side of the skylight in the bedroom at the back) is quite solid.

I have never seen this happen to any van I have worked on, but that is not to say it will not.
I think the risk is possibly more likely on older vans with loose laid roof skins which are only held in place by the roof fittings, ie rooflights, flue , TV aerial, than the modern bonded roof vans.

My roof is aluminium but i think its solid enough lets hope so anyway.

Some models now advertise that the roof has been reinforced to take the panels. I would take professional advice if yours is not one of them.

For some years now Bailey have boasted a fully booked Bonded roof. They even put a Ford Monde on top.I doubt a solar panel would cause any problem on these Bailey models.
