Herself and I have just returned from our 2011 Eurojaunt, and I thought you all might be interested in some facts and figures.
We left home in South Wales on May 16th, and travelled to Dover via Warwick. (as you do...)
Dunkirk to St Omer, then on to Venlo on the Dutch German border, then to Wildenhausen, Lubeck,Copenhagen,Malmo, Hoor,(for the European Classic Caravan Rally), then return to Germany.Stayed at a lovely little town called Grossenbroder on the north west coast, then Berlin, then Dresden. The plan then was to go Austria, following some of Dianne t's wheeltracks down to Jodl.In Dresden our plans went astray, firstly with a minor ABS problem on the car, but majorly by the news of the death of a very dear friend back here in GoC. We used ADAC to recover the car (thanks Dianne!), Dresden Land Rover did a very speedy repair, and we returned home.
After our friend's funeral, Herself said that she no longer wanted to go to Vienna, so we went to the Isle of Skye instead! (an amazing place) We took two weeks to travel up, via Cheshire, Cumbria, Calander, and Loch Ness, and finally to Sligachan on Skye for eight days. Our return journey was via Aviemore, Jedburgh (where we found the dearest LPG ever at 89.9p),, Haswell near Hartlepool, York (Rowntree park), finishing up in Spalding, Lincs for the Royale club's fortieth anniversary celebratory rally.
We travelled 7,248 miles in 12 weeks, with fuel (LPG) varying between 65.9p and 89.9p, campsites from sublime (Sligachan) to moderate (Grossenbroder), fees from £10 to €32 per night, and fuel consumption averaged 12.5mpg.
Aside from the aforementioned ABS problem, the outfit gave no problems at all, which I consider pretty good for a combined age of 51 years. I don't think Herself and I did too bad either. Our combined age is 173 years!
A wonderful holiday, sadly marred by the break in the middle, but we did meet some new friends, who have very quickly become old friends, as we met them first in St. Omer, then again in York, and will meet up again in November.
So, anyone concerned about taking an old outfit abroad, don't be.Look after it, service it regularly, and all will be well, but just in case, join ADAC!
