Keeping cycles safe

Hello again.

Through one reason or another, my doc is recommending more exercise for me. I thought a good option is is for me and the missus to take our bikes away with us in the caravan, but I'm a little concerned about security. My mountain bike is worth a fair bit of money so I want to make sure its safe. We don't always put an awning up too so it could be on show and exposed to the elements.

Do other people have the same concerns and if so, what do they do?

Thanks in advance.

We usually take our bikes away and we bought a heavy duty Motorcycle chain (they are much longer than bike chains). We fit that around the bikes and then through the A Frame. Also bought a couple of heavy duty plastic bike covers from Argos (about

We take 4 or 5 bikes away with us; mine cost quite a bit, so we are fairly careful. We don't take the awning abroad, so we store them alongside the caravan under a large tarpaulin (about

We have Marin bikes and its a good idea to cover them or they attract to much attention. Lightweight dark nylon bag does the job.

Inside the caravan or car is a good idea, with QR wheels just pop the front wheel out if you have a largish estate style car they fit in with little trouble for the night.

We use motorbike locks as well.

A word of caution on the use of high quality ( and high price ) chains sold for the use of motorcyclists.

There was recently an interesting sequence of demonstrations shown on You Tube showing a man with a pair of bolt croppers attacking a whole range of such chains all of which claimed to resist such an attack for 20 minutes or more.

The longest that any of them survived was about 30 seconds so don't put too much trust ( or investment ) in them!

Regards,

Olly.
