Hi

I just wanted to know what kettles you all use in your Caravans (eg, gas, electric and whether you use a low wattage one)

On our first trip away at Easter we used a whistling gas kettle which drove me round the bend. I thought being in the great outdoors it would be nice to have something a bit different so opted for the gas kettle, but it took so long to boil.

Would appreciate your help, as I do love a nice cup of rosie ;-)

Hi Sam,

We just bought a cheapo jug kettle from Tesco a couple of years ago. It's not a purpose made 'caravan kettle' but it does the job and it's not a massively high watt rating.

Cost about

As low a wattage as possible.

If i recall correctly, our dedicated van kettle is 750watts.

But it is quite a wait for it to boil.

As Ron said the Tesco "Value" kettle is ideal - we bought one a while ago and it is great. Low wattage and does not take very long to boil. At the price they are charging even if it only lasts a few years it is excellent value.

Hi Caroline

How are you?

Absolutely, love the caravan.

We spent a week away at Easter, and I loved our little Adria.

The only bug bear that I have got is the bunk beds, they are such a nightmare to make up. I bought the kids duvets and have decided to do away with them and use their sleeping bags instead. We put mattress protectors, then sheets and then the duvets (I must admit they were 13.5tog as I thought we might be cold) How wrong was I? and there wasn't much gap left for the kids to sleep. Apart from that, I love it!!

We are away for 10 days at the end of May to Somerset, and am counting down the days. How are you getting on with yours??

PS.Do you attach the velcro on the bunk beds to the pole, because if you do it means you can't get a sheet on the mattress.

Glad I have got my Adria buddy to rely on ;-)

The above link is the type we have, but its out off stock!

The value tesco is 2.2kw. way too high a wattage. to use it you will have to switch most of the electrical appliances off.

Hi Sam, glad you are enjoying your new Adria and you had a nice break.

Yes, our mattress protectors seem to be staying put for some reason but sheets etc arent. we havent undone the velcro bit you asked about but we may try it. I have kinda just bunched the sheets up, folded them under at the side I cant tuck in and weighed them down with teddies/toys!. My daughter has to sort her sheets every time. I just cant get at the top bunk!even to open the blind but as you know I DID get stuck once! Everything else great. It really does feel like a second home. i feel at night it is much more shut off from the elements than our last one, very cosy. Washroom great. Havent tried the shower yet, have you? We are going to a site in a village in Ayrshire tomorrow. Apparently reviews say the owner is very enthusiastic about keeping the guests happy. looks an interesting one. Nice to hear from you, Sam

Hi Caroline

I still laugh at the thought of you on that top bunk ;-)

When we left to go home, my eldest Daughter had left the top window open and I had to climb up and try to close it.

Do you get allot of condensation on the top bunk.

Our bunks weren't attached to the poles or the velcro. I think it was the middle bunk mattress that you had to slide inside the pole, so we didn't bother. It means that you can tuck the sheets down the side alot easier.

I have been and bought all the kids new sleeping bags for the next trip so hopefully it will make a difference. We haven't used our shower yet, but love the washroom its great for getting changed in and for washing and dressing the little one.

Have a lovely trip away. Sam

Trouble with using a typical household kettle 2 to 3 kilowatts you may have to turn other things off. We opted for a small 1kw kettle from debenhams last year for about

We stayed on a site at Easter where there were tents as well as caravans/motorhomes, and the site electrics kept blowing. No wonder if people use ordinary domestic kettles, TVs etc, as they overload the electrics. People should check the amps of the equipment they are using at any one time - page 632 in The Caravan Club handbook is useful but I'm sure there are equivalents out there - and don't use more than 16 amps; less on many sites.

If you are using a 2.2kw kettle. Then that's about 10 amps.

Most of the sites we stay on have 10amp cb fitted in the supply post.

I know some vans have internal 15amp cb's, but our 2004 bailey is fitted with a 10amp cb, for the sockets.

So was i to use a 2.2kw kettle, and the fridge, or water heater cut in, then the cb will trip.

Have alook at this

http://www.johnlewis.com/230510215/Product.aspx
only 1500w (6.5a) so ok for most hookups and not too slow either. It also lifts off the base to make it easy to fill without having to unplug it. You can also get a stainless version which is 1800w (7.8a) which is a bit smarter.

I've seen them in Comet and Debenhams as well as John Lewis

We find the grill is OK for toast (but we don't eat much toast anyway, so don't feel we can justify the extra weight)

Hi

We have a silver kettle (for use on gas or electric hob) which whistles just incase we need it, been in the van/s for years, never been used.

We use a normal household electric kettle. You do have to watch that you haven't got too many other electrics appliances running at the same time or you'll trip.

My sister in law had one of those low wattage electric kettles and it was awful, took ages and ages to boil.
