Kia Soirento's first service

Hi

My Sorento Titan is due its first annual service at the end of the month. My nearest KIA dealer has quoted me £170, including a courtesy car. Is this a usual sort of KIA dealer price?

The Sorento is the first new car I have ever owned and so I am new to dealer servicing but I want to keep the warranties up to date.

My previous cars have been serviced by a local mechanic friend in his spare time. A very knowledgeable man he provides excellent service at a price CONSIDERABLY LESS than £170. He is not, however, a registered KIA dealer, obviously.

Any comments please.

Tim,

Under the 1953 Treaty of Rome & the 2003 ending of "Block Exemptiom" in the UK, legally, Kia cannot refuse a warranty claim just because you did not have the Sorrento serviced by a dealer, unless of course the failure was as a direct result of incorrect servicing. you are in fact not obliged to use the dealer network for servicing, however warranty repairs can only be carried out by an approved Kia dealer.

The use of dealers for servicing usually ensures that the correct service, carried out at the correct time/mileage is carried out & also they should check for any recalls/field campaigns, and carry them out, at the same time, something that your local mechanic cannot do.

The best case for using the dealer network to do the servicing is that "full dealer servicing" usually ensures a better trade in/resale price, & in the unlikely event of an "out of warranty" goodwill request, should you have a failure of a major component, is looked upon more favourably if there is evidence of full dealer servicing.

You can get your car serviced anywhere as long as they use the recommended service schedule and geniune parts.

With Mercedes the service record is stored electronically in the cars system (no service book)so the chance of your local independant having the equipment to enter this is unlikely.

The benefits of having dealer serving with Mercedes is that your mobillife is continued a very handy package.

Hi Alan

Thanks, Appreciate the info on the tyres. The previous tyres were Continentals, I put BF Goodriches on this time but now I know where to go when the rear tyres are due.

cheers

You may have hit on the one reason for going to a dealer, Kia suggest that the newest Tyres are fitted to the rear wheels, it helps to avoid transfer box problems. An independent garage would be unlikely to know about this potential problem.

Don't get me wrong,I think the dealer charges are daylight robbery.

Hi Rob Steve,

I was lucky. All 4 needed changing at the same time. Overall I am dead pleased with the Goodrichs. They look the part too. Never been stuck yet. In fact I get asked to pull a lot of others out!

HI Alan / Steve

Checked out the web site looks to be a good set up, my Sorrie came with 18 inch alloys, but they still worked out cheeper than the ones bought.

The new tyres were fitted on the front so that the tyre wear issue could be monitored regularly.

With regard to the transfer box, mine must have been one from the "bad batch". The box had to be changed after only having the car a couple of months.

Despite the problems it is still the best "tug" I've owned

Thanks for all the replies.

I will be taking the car into the dealer on Thursday now that I have been assured that is not expensive (for a dealer!!!). Keeping up the warranties, having the benefit of recalls and dealer-KIA communications are all very worthwhile.

A recent brake vaccum pump failure would have cost

The few Sorentos that have had Transfer Box problems were the Torque on demand mainly fitted to the top specs (XS) and with auto boxes. It is the clutch within the TB that fails. Look on the UK Kia web site and you will see lots of posts relating to the issue and Kias tech note too. Also the web site gives details of a gearbox specialst who does fully reconditioned units for

Ther are two things that "any VAT registered garage" can't do and they are to keep you up to date with service bulletins and recall information, both of which could cause problems as far as reliability and safety are concerned. Not to mention the drop in resale value compared to a dealer maintained vehicle.

The 4 year/40K is a big service so watch out! I had two local independants quote me for servicing and both were more expensive than the local KIA MD. My daughter hada Jeep Grand Cherokee and Jeep in Swindon were cheaper than non franchised garages. Some marques do recognise that if they want to retain the customers custom and potential future trade then reasonable servicing costs are essential.

Other Clive,

My Sorie is now out of warranty so I may well do a lot of the future servicing myself. It seems to me the biggest jobs are draining and refilling all the oils and changing the brake fluid. At 65k miles the rear brake pads are original, the fronts changed at 40k.

Other than the rust anti perforation examination I honestly don't think there is much a good diy man can't do himself.

Just for the record I again advise anyone changing their tyres to do all four at the same time or if only two, put the new ones on the rear.

Chers

Alan
