Hi can anyone give advice. ( sorry i also posted this in the towcar section)
i have just had the first MOT on my 59 plate sorento. i have been advised by the MOT station that i have a small nail in the offside rear tyre, but fortunatley i am not losing air.
Obviously sod's law states that it will fail while i am towing the van down some motorway, so i obtained a quote from kwik fit for a new tyre, who inform me that i need to change both tyres on the same axle. is this correct or are they trying it on, the quote came in at £320

It depends on what make and spec tyre Kwik Fit are offering you. Try looking at MyTyres, Black Circles and Tyre Shopper and if you know the range of tyre you would like ( budget, mid-range or premium) you will get a better idea. In my experience internet suppliers always beat Kwik Fit and can get the tyres to your chosen fitter within 24 hrs if ordered early in the day.

If its an old shape Sorento the tyres with the deepest tread should go on the rear as otherwise you could damage the Transfer/TOD system. Dont know about the new shape fwd cars.

Alternatively it sounds as if the nail hasnt penetrated the inner layer so why not remove it and check for a leak which if its in the main traed area would be suitable for full vulcanised repair at a tyre depot. This is a cheaper and safe option.

I would go the way other clive says. Take out the nail put water on the spot if no bubbles then no puncture.

I have just had a tyre repaired that had a nail in it but it leaked air to start of with. Took it to a local small garage in a Welsh village repared no problem, total cost including VAT £12. My local tyre repair man would have charged me about £8.

If you have the TOD (torque on demand) system on your Sorento as fitted to the XS spec then they are correct you will need to change 2 tyres on the same axle, if you dont have the TOD systen as fitted to the XE spec then you need only change the damaged tyre, the new tyers if 2 are needed should be fitted to the rear axle this again is to do with the operation of the TOD system.

I have just fitted 4 new tyres to my Sorento ( Hanook tryes) got them dirt cheap as I know some one in the trade cost me £290.00 for all 4, expect to pay about £90.00 each off the internet black circles, E tyres and the like this will buy you mid range tyres.
Places like Kwik Fit and ATS I found to be very expensive.

In April, I had 2 Falken tyres fitted on rear of our Shogun, cost including all the add ons, balance, disposal etc £228,from a local independant tyre and exhaust centre, the size was 265/70 16, I expect the Sorrento will be much the same.I find that the local independant is often considerably less expensive than the national chains, and they seem more helpful when I have had punctures to repair etc.
